Which of these ending types are your favorite?

I always appreciate a bittersweet ending. It takes guts for a film director to use one, given that studios often force them to obey the whims of test audiences (read: artless whiny tools) who insist the story coddle them like children who can't handle complexity.

Unhappy endings are similar. The only issue is that they are a bit easier to create, so they aren't always as good as bittersweet.

Happy endings are the vanilla of endings. You expect them, they don't do anything new, and they are usually what you get. They are okay (not great, but okay), but I hate it when they are shoehorned into a story that should lead to something less happy.

Cliffhangers generally suck. There are some that are okay, as when the sequel is a necessary part of an adaptation, but using them when no sequel is planned is basically a gun to the head of audiences to try to force a sequel out of the studio.

Gainax endings are a high risk, high reward. They could be great or terrible. The director needs to really know what they are doing for it to work.

-_- Sad to say i prefer the WTF ending. It tends to be bad, but definitely unexpected.

Also the kiss ending as well. I'm a sucker for a good romance story. Princess Bride

Whatever "The Devil" ending in Cyberpunk 2077 is. It genuinely changed my life and left me stunlocked in thought for a week. An ending that explores difficult and uncomfortable themes of near future. I'm not really sure which one of the 4 would it classify as. Other than that, an ending that solves a great mystery or an ending with an unexpected twist is always fun to experience

Yeah like E0N said, I don't really care how a story ends as long as it has a good meaning to it and fits the overall tone of the story itself. Cliffhangers I'm not usually a fan of, though it depends on how you go about them (I don't really consider open endings to be cliffhangers). By far tho my least favorite way to end a story is a 180 (these are NOT the same as a plot twist). To completely flip the narrative around to the other direction it was headed in is in my opinion disrespectful, not only to the audience, but also to the story itself. I feel like authors usually write endings that way for one of two reasons. A: the author is doing it just for the sake of doing it, which I think is just stupid and B: the author didn't like how the story was headed and changed it to how they wanted it to be (which is also stupid because who writes a story without a beginning and ending in mind???). Option B is probably more commonly seen in serialized media, like manga, and given that's one of my main sources of entertainment, it's very disappointing for me.

Those are honestly some of my favorite endings, depending on how well they're done. The Souls series definitely comes to mind.
Never played 'em, I've heard good things.

Something like the one I wrote where [REDACTED], and the characters [REDACTED] at the end.

It's for a project of mine, [REDACTED].

Obviously I like happy endings but also bittersweet ones. I think these works very well in RPG games and with cliffhanger, I like them when there's a sequel or at least the main Story of the game is "closed" and they're used more as a post credit sequel bait and not as we didn't finish the story please buy our 35 dollars expansion pack to see the real ending.

Number 1, and living the moment (no matter the spoilers).

To those who watched the Mist, that's my good example of Sad Ending

To those who played River City Girls, I'm sorry
