i had google try to find a game in this franchise with a one man/team story mode; it's ai gave me this:
"If you want a true "one guy's story" experience, go for DW2, DW3, DW5, or DW6. If you want to play the main story with a friend, DW8 is a great choice for its co-op, even if it's kingdom-centric. For something different, try Origins."
You mean like one single story mode? Musou games don't really work that way, but technically the One Piece Pirate Warriors games have a single "true" story mode (which follows the canon of One Piece), and I think Dynasty Warriors Origins trimmed down the campaign into something more resembling a single-player action-RPG. But I haven't played it. I think the Dragon Quest Heroes games are also like that.
you excluded the spin-offs like one piece, but i will mention another one that is "one linear story only": Arslan Senki - the game which is never at sales
there's also a very good Berserk game in PS2/Dreamcast
Warriors: Legends of Troy has a story mode that works like that. During the main game, you switch off playing as characters from both sides of the Trojan War. It's a spinoff, but that's what you're going to get if that's what you're looking for.
