In 1993 I paid $649 for the AES with Fatal Fury 2. Most I ever spent for a cart was $350 in 1996 for KOF 96 while it had just dropped in the arcades. Bought KOF 96 straight from SNK themselves, they were in Torrance California at the time. Heard rumbling of the 3DO when I was planing to buy the AES, but didn't care for it.

Yes, I still have them to this day. Wore out the player 1 stick.

PS3 is the most iconic price tag but 3DO being $700 in 1993 bucks is insane. And the fact it would become outclassed in every regard a year later by a system less than half its price is the cherry on top.

Just remember Neo Geo was released for 650 Dollars, adjust that by inflation and it's equivalent to 1.550 dollars today.

afaik the 3do's price tag was so bad that some retailers outright refused to sell it, and as infamous as the ps3 price was i'm pretty sure this wasn't the case for it

The PS3, easily.
Nobody wanted a 3DO but a PS3? We all wanted a PS3 and Sony be like:

"for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

Definitely PS3 since it was the successor to the best selling ever console and more expensive than the Xbox 360 by a whopping $200. The PS2 was the mainstream console of choice and they priced themselves out of the mainstream with its successor. While the Blu-Ray drive was worth the price, $599.99 for a console was insane in 2006. It's still pretty insane nowadays. PS5 Pro was slightly more, sans a disc drive, at $699.99 and its sales post-launch have slowed down significantly.

i found a website with some info on console prices on release and adjusted for inflation.

i also complied the info in a text file as well.

What about the 3ds?

You are on fire, super useful reference.

Just the other day I was lamenting how hard it is to find old prices online, everything is AI generated content in google nowadays.

I was like "Hey, where's the Neo Geo and 3DO?" 😅

thanks.

i think that is what ai would be best for, compiling lists and sorting data with a human overseeing it. that is what computers and ai are best at: doing specific tasks in a specific manner with human input and correction. it's not meant to be a replacement for humans; just a tool to help assist with making other things.

they are on there. i've looked it over again, and they are listed in chronological release order, hence the atari 2600 being first and the ps5 pro being last.
here's is the specifics for those two systems for quick reference:
Neo Geo 1990 $649 $1,552 SNK
3DO 1993 $699 $1,510 3DO

My bad, I meant AI generated blogs and pages boosted by Marketing Schemes (SEO, et al.)
I have never used AI to ask my questions, I guess I am very accustomed to searching myself...
But you are right, maybe I should ASK the AI. Instead of navigating AI Generated Spam Sites.

thanks.

I know, the price was so high it didn't fit the screen😂

a youtuber that i recently cane across name nuxanor uses an ai site to double check on stuff while he talks and comments on various things with his viewers while live streaming. it seems pretty accurate from what i can tell.
going from what i've seen on dougdoug's channel, ai seems to only be able to handle so much before it starts to wobble and then collapse in on itself. it can be quite hilarious to see it try to keep something going for more than five minutes.

Objectively? The Neogeo if you don't care about fighting game whatsoever.

And the 3DO as the PS3 at least had masterpieces.

Oh and the Magnavox Odyssey would've cost 719$ today. Yep, 700 for a console with 0 graphics and no music...

How much was the Ouya back then?

And the Jaguar?

Atari Jaguar 1993 $249 $538
ouya
standard edition $99.95
limited edition [double storage and newly designed controller] $129
inflation prices would be $118.45 and $147.50 respectively with a quick guessing calculation.

Ok, so I gotta ask then; how much for this bad boy with inflation? Bought brand new from SNK in 1996 for $350. I sacrificed and struggled to get it, with shitty job at the time, miracle I was able to save up to buy it. Was also the last time I was able to get new Neo game.

I'd say Sony had the best and worst moments announcing the price of their systems. Worst being "599 US DOLLARS", but the best was from E3 1995 where, in response to Sega pricing the Saturn at $399, all SCEA President Steve Race had to say was "299", and the crowd went wild.

Yet today it would be quite expensive.
