I know that this is a trope almost as old as gaming itself, but I have always found it a little infuriating when characters in a game don't react at all when you, a complete --often armed-- stranger break into their homes and start taking shit in plain sight, often complementing the looting with some gratuitous destruction of property just for the hell of it.

Do you know of any games where this DOESN'T happen? I seem to recall the NPCs on Soul Blazer being VERY not cool with that, but it's been ages.

We should probably make a list of titles where people react normally to breaking and entering lol.

Jrpg staple where you can just loot someone's house and all's well. ::winkfelix
Can't recall a game where npcs reacted, I'm sure there are but I can't think of anything.

Let's be honest now. If I walked into your house and you're busy walking a set route in your kitchen until the end of time, do you really NEED the Fleece of Everlasting Invincibility? At least I'm giving it a home where it'll get some use!

No, they're very cool with it. One woman you save early on openly adopts you as her child. Keep in mind your a literal angel, so it's not like you're an unwelcome guest. There are a few PSX and PS2 rpgs I can think of that mention it in a joking way like Steam Bot Chronicles, and there's also the infamous "theft" option in Link's Awakening.

You can also steal from the vendor in Zelda Twilight Princess

There are tons of RPGs where at least one NPC will complain about it, but this is usually intended as a joke. Exploring a town, including inside houses, is a genre staple, and let's be real, it'd be annoying as hell if every NPC was like "what are you doing here!" every time.

I'm playing Shining the Holy Ark for the Sega Saturn, and there's one NPC that gives you a big speech about stealing when you grab ONE coin from his bed, there's even one achievement for doing it😂

I recall breaking pots in Windwaker and you have to pay for damages.

Although no NPCs are present, breaking into a apartment in Mankind Divided alerts local security who will then attack you if they find you still in there.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is pretty good about that. If you step in a private area people get rightfully paranoid and pissed lol.

I always headcanoned it being the 80s, back when people weren’t locking their doors and just letting anyone in

Do you now? By the time these things start spawning as random loot, you're bound to have at least five of them just sitting there in your inventory, waiting for you pawn them off to pay for another round of upgrades to your Pointy Stick Of Clicking On Targets Until They Disappear™.

In Gothic 1 and 2, you will be actively attacked by the owners and berated verbally, people also will comment if you're trying to sneak around.
THANK YOU! I remembered that game exactly for it, but I had completely forgotten the title.

Gothic's already mentioned so I'll add Fable to the list. You'll be fined if someone catches you stealing.

You're welcome. I loved the worldbuilding and the sense of freedom and pacing... Prepare for some clunky combat though.

How else am I going to buy 99 Fleezle Wing Feathers that I'll keep in my inventory just in case?

Link's Awakening.
hivemind! My first thought when I saw the thread was how Marin scolds you for breaking people's pots and going through their things :loldog But I guess I think of Link's Awakening a lot because it's my favorite Zelda game ::heart

I know the NPCs in Oblivion aren't too happy about you taking things from their house, they also get upset if you're breaking in or in their house at night.
They'll hire hitmen in Skyrim if you steal from them. Doesn't matter how undetected you were. The NPCs always know who took their sweetroll. I know Khajiit are rare in Skyrim, but assuming my Khajiit did it every single time is just silly.

They aren't wrong, though.
