I, for instance, love Rhythm Heaven and Taiko no Tatsujin for the following reasons:
- Both games are very simple from a gameplay perspective: The mechanics are easy to understand and as long as you follow the rhythm you'll have no problem playing either game.
- Both games are extremely unique and creative: Self explanatory. I mean, just look at them; Rhythm Heaven got that quirky art style, while Taiko no Tatsujin embraces Japanese culture. Both games feature beautiful visuals that will catch your attention immediately.
- Good song selection: I think Taiko is the most remarkable one here due to the many collabs the franchise has had over the years, but Rhythm Heaven also has some bangers like Fan Club, Remix 8, Karate Man, to name a few.

What's yours?

Aside from my obvious fan bias, I also just think they're fun and well put together games.

Guitar Hero.
By no means I'm a rock fan, I do listen to it but I don't have extensive knowledge about it at all, this game open my eyes a bit about other cool bands in the genre outside of the extremely popular ones.
What game should I try first? I'm familiar with the franchise, but never played a single Guitar Hero game. I've heard of Clone Hero though, I might go with that.

Go straight to Clone Hero, you can add community created song charts in Clone Hero and there are of course all the Guitar Hero packs, you can play them in any order you want, also you can add other charts if you feel like it.
Plenty of memes song tho.

I really liked Friday Night Funkin'.
Though there's full of uncertainty if we're ever gonna get the full game. I mean how long has it been? Really wish they're just taking their time.
What? I thought it was already out (the full game), never really paid much attention to it. Are the devs not active on Discord or something? Maybe they already answered some questions regarding the full release.

While not insanely fun to play imo, its such a fun little adventure and the character designs i just adore to death, and while i know this is probably a lame answer, it just feels so unique, there was a lot of vision behind this game and its art really ties it all together, im more of a vibes over gameplay person tho lol

My favorite rhythim game is "Geometry Dash" and about the Guitar Hero series... The best one is "Guitar Hero III", but my brain always go with the start from beginning thought... That's what I did with KoF. My favorite nowadays is KoF 2002 UM, but I started playing from the first one, "The King of Fighters '94".

Deemo, cause it isn't just a rhythm game, it also has puzzle solving, and a nice story (speaking of the PC version, don't care about the mobile one). The music is great too.

Symphonic Rain is fun too, a VN with an occasional rhythm mini-game, very cute story.

If those don't really count then... Umm, Bust a Groove 2, impressive animations for the PS1, and you actually have to listen to the rhythm, instead of seeing icon approach whatever bar.

I'mma just put my top 5 'cus yes, lol.
Um Jammer Lammy
Bust A Groove
Gitaroo Man
Mad Rat Dead
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure

As for why they're my favorites/what's special about them, for starters, they're colorful and really nice to look at, heh.
I love stylish or wacky stuff, and each of these games fall into either category, or both, lol.
The games all have also original songs made for them, rather than pull from whatever irl songs were popular at the time, which is a plus, imo.
Mad Rat Dead is also more unique compared to the rest, because its a platformer/rhythm game hybrid, you basically run and jump on the beat of the music, it feels so good when you get in the groove for it, heh.

I haven't really played many rhythm games, but I thought Cytus alpha and Deemo were really fun.

Especially because of their control schemes - with Cytus it can feel like your fingers are dancing to the song and with Deemo it's like how a kid imagines what playing piano is like. Nice and haptic.

(Shame the studio behind those games seems to have become really problematic since)

Nah, it's fine. I'm more of a Cytus guy but Deemo is cool. Since you like story focused rhythm games, what's you opinion on Unbeatable? Have you heard of it?

Check out the BIT.TRIP BEAT games if you haven't. Runner3 is my favorite in the franchise.
