What's a game that got you through a hard time or has a special place in your heart?

Mount and Blade Warband helped me to get through the aftermath of 2 absolutely disastrous relationships (yes both times).

I met my best friend, through gushing over how cool Halo is.

Library of Ruina changed a lot the way i see and live through life.

Hmm... a lot, really.
Games that have good music and help defocus on looming, apparently unsolvable issues until the mind is right to actually do so.

A few immediate examples I can think of:

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Outrun
  • UT2004
  • Streets of Rage
  • The Specialists (CS total conversion)
  • Shinobi
  • Road Rash
  • Virtual On
  • Soul Calibur

When I was 17 years old my anxiety and health issues all appeared at the same time, and collectively decided that they wanted to inhabit my body and mind forever at that point. This made me really sickly and I had to spend a lot of time away from school due to being ill so often, which sucked hard because I loved school at the time.

WoW: Mists of Pandaria had just come out, and the beautiful music and landscapes helped me escape to a world where I could be a hero, free of my pains in real life, while still letting me stay in touch with all my mates who also played.

That particular expansion will always hold the sappy title of ”game that saved me” in my life.

That's interesting that you feel that way about that game. World of Warcraft was the game that made me swear off MMOs for good. Almost made me swear off gaming as a whole. MMOs to me are time suckers that took away from my studies, hobbies and relationships. I can see how in your circumstance it was a lifesaver, but for me it was quite the opposite. I don't like bringing up negativity about our hobby but I felt compelled to share that. Learn from my mistakes, young ones.

I feel the same way about MMOs.

These games helped me a lot when I was suffering from severe depression and mental illness.

Agreed, i haven't Touched a MMORPG in over wanna say 6 years?. My Time Vampire was ESO <Elder scrolls online. i spent every Wakening moment on it for about 3 years, maybe 5 i don't even remember now.
And WAY To much money on it to.

Even when i see what looks like a Interesting MMO Now, i just tell myself
"I Don't need another Time Vampire, sucking my.... Time/Cash anymore"

I have a friend that plays FF14 a lot. Even though it looks solid and it would be nice to join them, I don't want another MMO stint (had enough of it with Ragnarok Online back when it was still somewhat new).

No worries. MMOs are very different for many people and memories of them illicit lots of different reactions. I was never an "addict" and I never hardcore raided or whatever, I just played because I loved going on adventures in that world. Still do from time to time. :)

Chrono Cross was the most significant instance of this. I had a moment while playing it for like the thousandth time where some shit was going on in my life, and distinctly I remember thinking "I'll always have this." It comforts me and just makes me happy to experience.

A lot of NES, Nintendo 64, and Gamecube games have really fond memories attached to them, too.

I discovered Dragon Quest IX when I was jobless and very depressed... It helped me out immensely by giving me something to look forward to after getting turned out at every corner when trying to apply to places.
