I recall playing the DS Open warfare games and they sucked.

Armageddon or Reloaded are the best ones by a country mile.

Armageddon is older and might be annoying to get going, but I think it works fine. Reloaded is a sort of remake of it with modern graphics and way better physics, but it's a lot slower.
Armageddon also has an active multiplayer community and custom maps too.

Interesting question, I guess Armageddon like Bjorvy mentioned, but I like the 3D games on the PS2, those are fun and they have a legit campaing mode, so that's worth trying.

World Party had some cool stuff in it, although technically it's just Armageddon with a different front end

For me the answer would be: Worms Armageddon

Or you can also go for the one that gets your attention the most.

I doubt the 3D ones will get any love here, but I honestly enjoy them. It seems the AI plays fairer in those, too.
Early attempts were a bit meh but I always thought that they managed to get the formula working in Mayhem. Shame they quit right after that.

The lore is deep. You must take heed of your pick when selecting among the library of Worms. This is the only way to learn of the wisdom what is carried in the minds of those who practice the profession and art of the worminger.
IDK, never played one.

Worms world part is by far, one of the better Worms games.
Dunno about console wise. but the PC Version is Top notch and fun as hell if you play with other people.

Worms Armageddon if you want the oldschool feeling.
Worms WMD for a modern approach
Worms Ultimate Mayhem for the 3D playstyle.

I'd recommend Battle Islands. I also tried Open Warfare on my PSP and I also put it down immediately because Battle Islands has more interesting environments and level music, even the bazooka rocket trajectory feels improved. It does have some clunk to it like the pre level 60 second "intelligence gathering" that I think was meant to make ad-hoc multiplayer more interesting. It may not be the best Worms game but it was only released on the PSP and Wii so maybe it's a hidden gem, and the core gameplay is solid enough that I could suggest starting with it.

Yeah, Worms World Party is the best one out the old school 2D ones. For those not in the know, it's basically Armageddon with a few minor extras. It was pretty widely reviled by the fan base at the time because Team 17 thought people would shell out full price for what could've been a free update. The scars still haven't healed really and only Armageddon is getting any real love. It got a real nice updated version on GOG (possibly Steam as well) that runs like butter and has support for modern resolutions and all other neat things while World Party got a 'Remaster' that crashes every time a worm falls into water, or at least it did when it came out. Maybe they patched it since but the bad taste in my mouth remains.
