because most people don't know it existed. i knew about it and had one too, and i'm not a sony fanboy or a weeb. it had like, next to marketing. i don't remember seeing a single commercial or ad for it. i think i read about on wikipedia.

You need to search up the definition of commercially failed here. I doubt it includes “sold ten million copies and has a huge library of great selling games”.

Sony certainly views the Vita as a commercial flop in every metric just Nintendo views the WiiU as a failure. I don't think a console has been able to call itself a commercial success off of less than 20m units sold since the 80s. Maybe critically these systems have more love, but commercially its clear they bombed in the eyes of the companies that produced them.

Vita most definitely was a failure. Awesome device, but indeed was trounced by the upsurge in Android/iOS support. Sony didn't market it well and ended up shoveling it to the wayside. The PS3/PS4 took precedence and Sony saw no fruit against Nintendos handheld dominance.
