VF5 Returns in New Remaster Titled “Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.”, Out Next Week on Steam

In news that shook the 3D fighting game community all over the globe, Virtua Fighter made its triumphant return to the modern gaming hemisphere via both the announcement of a new game spearheaded by Ryu Ga Gotoku studios, the brilliant team behind the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, and the announcement of a brand new remaster titled Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., acting as a revival of the iconic 2006 series entry, Virtua Fighter 5.

The game is set to release on January 27th according to the Steam page. Although the official game website lists it as the 28th, could be a timezone thing. The game is listed as being $15.99 and is currently up for pre-order.

Rollback Netcode added

One of the most important changes to highlight is the addition of Rollback Netcode, a feature that was sorely lacking in the previous remaster, Ultimate Showdown. If you’re unfamiliar with Rollback, there’s a fantastic video explaining it in 3 minutes that’ll get you up to speed.

This addition puts R.E.V.O. up there with modern fighters, and ensures a team that’s aware and doing its best to deliver a quality game, as expected of RGG.

It also worth noting that even though Rollback won’t be added to Ultimate Showdown, all the balance changes in R.E.V.O. will be heading its way to ps4 users regardless, as tipped by reliable forum user; @Somnia.

Pre-Order Sale

But that’s not everything, there’s an ongoing sale. If you pre-order it now, you save 20% off. It seems like Sega wants to incentivize as many people as possible. It’s nice to see them improve from how Ultimate Showdown was marketed. This breathes some hope into this remaster on top of Rollback being added.

Yakuza Costumes!

The RGG studio putting another RGG game ad in their game? Who woulda thunk! But seriously, on top of being spearheaded by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, this also still uses Ultimate Showdown as its base, so it’s no surprise seeing DLC from that game make an appearance here. And we can’t complain, seeing how many of us here at RGT are big Yakuza buffs!

Not only is it quite the novelty seeing series protagonist Akira Yuki cosplay as the Dragon of Dojima, while pulling it off really well might we add, but the Ichiban outfit, protagonist of the 7th and 8th numbered main installments of the franchise, looks so true-to-life, it’d fool this article’s author if they didn’t know any better!

System Requirements

Being a PC exclusive, knowing system requirements is a must before you proceed with your purchase. While it’s not impossible for the game to come to consoles, preferably with crossplay if doable, it seems as if R.E.V.O. will be sitting on its PC bench for some time, so here’s hoping your rig could run it!

All jokes aside, I'd actually like to try this out. Never properly played a Virtua fighter game before. I've played a decent deal of Dead or Alive 5, though, and I'm a huge fan of Jacky and Sarah Bryant.

I am very excited for the new one. But is going to be very funny if it has a full length movie story mode to explain everything that the other five games didn't 😅. Because the only story for now is that the guys doing the tournament are bad and they have Silver Surfer (Dural) to fight the other guys. Still love the franchise.

I've only dabbled in VF, with the original 2006 release and Final Showdown but I'm excited to get into it with both the remaster and the new game maybe when that's out. I remember liking both the ones I tried but there was so many other things out at the time that I never put the real time into, but now I'm looking for a new fighting game to get into so I'm going to dive in.

The anime is likely the only story we’d ever get. It’s good though!

Same man I’ll be pre-ordering Yakuza pirate haha not enough money for games

I played a ton of VF4 on the PS2 so I'll be grabbing this. But what's up with the recommended PC specs? Seems odd to be targeting 4k and requiring specs like that, most fighting game players won't be playing this at 4K if it has any chance of impeding performance or image quality given the nod to DLSS and FSR in the same blurb.

Possibly worth noting is that while the PS4 version of Ultimate Showdown isn't getting the rollback netcode update it HAS gotten all of the balance changes from REVO. If you're stuck on console, give the update a shot!

Took em so long they could have just made a collection where all 5 games have these features but nOOOO
I have a feeling we'll be getting more VF with rollback in the future. Considering VF6 can't possibly come out until the end of 2026 at the earliest, Sega is gonna have to keep VF in people's minds. The easiest way to do that is more re-releases and as Arcsys and SNK have shown us, throwing rollback into older games is a surefire way to guarantee some sales. There are a couple talented studios out there who specialize in putting rollback into older games too, so while 3D fighters provide a unique challenge we have seen via VF3 on fightcade that it is more than doable with the right team behind it.

Considering Revo is "only" $20 I assume $10-20 rollback versions of at least 2 and maybe 4 are inevitable. Ideally we get the entire set eventually but only time will tell.

I'm not a big Virtua Fighter fan but I seriously hope it does well so that Tekken has an actual competitor and Bandai Namco wises up.

On the other hand I've seen people claim that "if Tekken 8 keeps this up it's gonna be replaced by Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O." and I'm here like "yeah, sure, dude".

So good that it costs only 20 bucks AND comes with rollback, feels trailblazing in a way.

Hopefully if this gets enough sales it'll warrant a VF collection, definitely looking forward to playing this on the Deck!

That’s a really great info to point out. I’ll edit it into the piece. Much obliged.

Yeah VF5 REVO is not supposed to be real competition. I mean the base game is from 2006. The latest Tekken was 5 back then. But what it is, is a very nice alternative to Tekken 8. 3D fighting is and should be more than just Tekken.

If VF is successful, than Bandai Namco and the industry will take notice. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised, if Soul Calibur comes back too because of this.

One of the producers of the new game has gotten the title of ,,Producer of VF Legacy".
Pretty sure that a VF Collection is going to happen.
