For the uninitiated (like I was until recently)
"Tate yoko mode" is a combination of two gaming terms: Tate mode, which refers to playing a game in a portrait (vertical) orientation, and yoko mode (or yoko), which means landscape (horizontal) orientation. This term is often used when discussing the practice of playing games that are designed for vertical arcade cabinets on modern horizontal screens by physically rotating the display.
  • Tate mode: A game designed to be played vertically on a screen, common in classic arcade games like shoot 'em ups (shmups).
  • Yoko mode: The standard horizontal orientation of most modern displays.
  • Tate yoko mode: A term that describes the specific setup where a vertical game is played in its intended portrait orientation (Tate), but on a horizontal screen (Yoko). This is often achieved by rotating the television or monitor 90 degrees, and sometimes involves rotating the game's inputs to match the new screen orientation.

I had no idea this was a thing until I played Donpachi & DoDonpachi (eBoots) on my PSP, and I was blown away with being able to play vertical schm'ups this way..

Are there any others that you are aware of?
