Microsoft's Defender update for Windows 10 and Windows 11 renders SSDs and HDDs unreadable.

The error occurring after the Microsoft Defender update is evident in Windows 11 versions KB5063878 and KB5063875, and Windows 10 versions KB5063709, KB5063877, KB5063871, and KB5063889.

Microsoft's important security update (KB5063878) for Windows 11 24H2 has caused serious problems for users. According to reports, the update can render SSD and HDD drives inaccessible and even cause data corruption.

As part of the August 2025 “Patch Tuesday” released last week, Microsoft released critical security updates for Windows 10 (KB5063709, KB5063877, KB5063871, KB5063889) and Windows 11 (KB5063878, KB5063875).

Among these packages was a critical update for Defender to address the Lamma stealer malware detected in new Windows ISO installations. However, this fix caused unexpected side effects on storage devices. According to users, after the update, SSDs and HDDs disappear from the system, and SMART values become unreadable.

The issue particularly arises during large file write operations. If your hard drive is full and you copy more than 50GB, this error is reported.

Models using the Phison/E18 controller, such as the Corsair Force MP600, Phison PS5012-E12, SanDisk Extreme Pro M.2 NVMe, Fikwot FN955, and Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 1 TB, are among the drives where the issue has been reported after the update.

Damn! And I thought they had learned their lesson after that last Windows 7 fix had rendered computers unable to shut down.

And they still think that replacing their QA team with AI was the right idea? XD

Good thing I deleted the whole Windows Update!!! lol

Seriously these kinds of BS is why the current company I work for ditched Windows shit and fully transitioned to Apple computers. They also ditched the ancient IT team whom legends said they were the first people hired for the company and were not changed ever since then and no one ever saw their face or those who saw them died!! Despite they are fired now another legend says they still live in a secret place within the building!!!! lolol

I'm thinking about suspending updates for a while. Look up Chris Titus Tech if you want to do the same.
That's honestly a solid advise.

Most updates are really hostile, anyway... some even broke people's custom shells for sport.

I think there was a program that allowed you to completely disable and enable updates, but I don't remember exactly.
CTT does, but that functionality is broken in "Home" versions of the OS. Still, I'd like to know this other program you mentioned and I will start a thread about this to help people out.

i updated it last week but i have had zero issues so far, knock on wood ^^' I hope this is fixed in a future update.

Regardless of the software, i recommend against updating immediately when a new update is released.
I think it's always better to wait a week or two and see how it's received before updating.

There are some firewall programs that can cut the access of programs to internet, and completely prevent automatic updates.
They can even stop windows components from accessing internet, including auto-update.

By the way, I had a 1TB Kioxia G2 (the DRAM model) that died 2 days ago while copying a 500GB file. I thought it was because I had undervolted it too much in throttlestop, but the real reason was Microsoft :D. Microsoft, you owe me $25 + 15 hours.I am currently using Adata Legend 750 500GB, and it is still functioning. I have loaded 450GB of files onto it.

Kioxia is completely dead. It doesn't work with a USB converter, and it doesn't even show up when plugged into the motherboard. Be careful, guys.

I have Windows Defender force disabled anyway and use no antivirus at all.
Just have the Web browser armed

Apparently i got the update a few days ago. But reading this,
"The issue particularly arises during large file write operations. If your hard drive is full and you copy more than 50GB, this error is reported."
Im not so sure this is something to even worry about

There is comment on reddit saying that users encounter errors every time they transfer large amounts of files multiple times. I can't test it because I don't have more than one kioxia G2, but mine died while copying 450GB PS2 games at 35% :d(win11)

I uninstalled the update, the lame part is W11 doesnt show it as uninstalled in the update history.

Invasive updates, uninstalling programs messing with the whole operating system and other Gates shenanigans are a trademark of windows for years, more now that you can't easily do manual updating.
I'm rather happy that I moved from the windows wiping ecosystem.

Ah nice, another reason to make my jump to Linux faster, fuck corporate managed OS.

The worst thing is that I can't simply disable automatic updates permanently without going after lots of hurdles and that's the same with almost all corporate software for really basic functions, sigh...

I know not everyone has multiple PCs to use, but this is why my one and only Windows 10 PC has never been online, period, since the initial setup. Anything I need to put on it can be done via flash drive or external SSD. If I need a driver updated, I'll get the update myself. I don't think that machine has even been online since the initial setup. Best of luck to everyone.

I hope your drives are safe, though maybe back up anything important now in small batches while things are going smoothly.

I've seen too many computers messed up in one way or another by MacOS updates (or abandoned with significant bugs) to trust them either, tbh.

Been moving a lot of things over to Linux, but I'm unfortunately still tied to Windows for some applications currently. Hoping to slowly phase those out and make the jump with Proton and CrossOver now being fairly well implemented, when I can find the time.

Yes. Everyone shall shall depart Microsoft behind in a pile of turd and replace that rubbish with Linux, even Apple!!! I can't believe people are still so stubborn about staying so... ancient!!!

i'm kinda afarid to update now... but windows 10 support is dying off so i'm in a bind.
If you want to keep using 10 specifically, there's always Windows 10 LTSC. Strips out a lot of junk as well. It'd require a reinstall though.
