Microsoft's Defender update for Windows 10 and Windows 11 renders SSDs and HDDs unreadable.
The error occurring after the Microsoft Defender update is evident in Windows 11 versions KB5063878 and KB5063875, and Windows 10 versions KB5063709, KB5063877, KB5063871, and KB5063889.
Microsoft's important security update (KB5063878) for Windows 11 24H2 has caused serious problems for users. According to reports, the update can render SSD and HDD drives inaccessible and even cause data corruption.
As part of the August 2025 “Patch Tuesday” released last week, Microsoft released critical security updates for Windows 10 (KB5063709, KB5063877, KB5063871, KB5063889) and Windows 11 (KB5063878, KB5063875).
Among these packages was a critical update for Defender to address the Lamma stealer malware detected in new Windows ISO installations. However, this fix caused unexpected side effects on storage devices. According to users, after the update, SSDs and HDDs disappear from the system, and SMART values become unreadable.
The issue particularly arises during large file write operations. If your hard drive is full and you copy more than 50GB, this error is reported.
Models using the Phison/E18 controller, such as the Corsair Force MP600, Phison PS5012-E12, SanDisk Extreme Pro M.2 NVMe, Fikwot FN955, and Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 1 TB, are among the drives where the issue has been reported after the update.
