So, question to the forum:

Did you ever have or know anybody who had the TV Tuner? Is it possible to use with public broadcasting in the current day? Is it possible broadcast your own content to the Tuner? It’s pure novelty anyway, but I would like to know if it’s anything more than just shelf candy in 2025.

Transition from Analog to Digital pretty much killed it, much like battery TVs. A bit of a shame, really.
Still, it was quite a novel thing for the time.

I am scared to even imagine what the picture quality would have been on one of those things.

>Did you ever have or know anybody who had the TV Tuner?

I once saw it in a shop window turned off and in a box. The picture quality is low (lower than playing vhs).

>Is it possible to use with public broadcasting in the current day?

depends on which country you are in at the moment. In South America and Africa there are still countries that transmit analog signals.

>Is it possible broadcast your own content to the Tuner?

yes, but it depends on what transmission power you want to have to use it and it may be expensive what you want to do.

do-it-yourself circuits:

I didn’t have a Game Gear growing up. And sadly, the Game Gear TV Tuner is rendered useless because of the U.S analog tv shutdown on June 12, 2009. The only way to get it working again is to mod it.

I thought it was the coolest thing when I found out it existed but no one I know had one (I had a few friends with Game Gears). I doubt they sold a ton of those.

I had the white one with the special carrying case. Sold it though since it's literally pointless, other then as a collectable. But it did make a good one, to be fair.

tv antennas still work in america. i set up one for my mom and for my aunt. it did pick up some tv channels like comet tv, get tv and grit tv. you do need to be in range of one to pick up the signal and the higher up the antenna is and the closer you are to a broadcast source, the more channels you could get. so, this could still work; you would just have to try it out and see what happens.
