Full translation by morelikejonarbuckle0. "The foundation of this translation relies on Deepl, an AI translator. It's the most accurate one I can find. Otherwise, I used ChatGPT for phrases that don't translate well. This was originally done by @jjjewel (who's pretty much gone from the internet past 2015). I kept noticing little differences and oddities in the text and I thought I could try and rewrite everything and a bit more. @LandonAndEmma was going to do a similar thing, so I wanted them to join me so we can make the best version of Tomodachi Collection (in English) possible. True fact: IA its a baby tool technology, its not mature and like you said yourself needs improvement until then will wait patiently for human english translations that will be reviewed the meaning of the words in every action or context in any videogame. For example context some dev creates bakery mexican videogame. In that game exists this sweet bread name concha, the ia will be tagged the word pussy or vagina because sometimes the ia allucinates or get flawed the translations.

Bitching its okay and will be ultra boring if all the world likes machine gaming translation IA.
"AI may get 5 words wrong (out of 500,000), so it should not be used"
That's argument isn't very strong.

I made a meme for fun.

there's no need to be arrogant, the user's native language isn't english. they're from mexico, and ia means "inteligencia artificial" (artificial intelligence) in spanish.
Fair, I apologize, I'm also not a native English speaker and in my language they are also reversed like in Spanish, sorry to both of you.

AI not IA, makes me question if you know anything about artificial intelligence let alone the long tedious process of machine translation.

Ah, I've been DYING for a translation of this. Much love.

Also, to all you bitching about AI: it's a tool that will improve and inevitably be used by everyone in the coming decades, and it's already proven to be a sustainable business venture that rakes in billions every year. It's not going away, so shut up and get over yourselves.

well, actually, what i mostly see here is people speaking out against ai-made translations, and people directly insulting those who are against ai-made translations.

i have not seen anti-ai people insulting others simply for playing those translations. but when it is the other way around, ad hominem attacks from ai-translation supporters seem to be pretty frequent.

They called curators of the site "obtuse". Called a game they haven't played "sloppy hackjob".
Called the posting of these translated games a "disservice".
Of course, they also downvoted the game they don't intend to play, just because.

We are not paid, and the translators are not paid. It's crazy to have to remember that no one is working for anyone here, everyone does all of it for the sake of sharing cool things that CAN be ignored. This place feels like twitter sometimes, honestly, where people think that being toxic will make what they want happen.

Games will keep being translated using AI, people will have to learn to deal with it, like adults (assuming most people here are adults, which i highly doubt, due to said behaviour)

It's kind of laughable to phrase opposition as trying to "take away" access to machine translations. If vocal opposition makes you uncomfortable and raises the social cost of promoting this stuff, that's how change happens.
"laughable to phrase opposition as trying to take away access to machine translations" Bro are you fucking blind? What else are you supposed to call it when the said "opposition" is literally calling for them not to be added? That's the definition of "taking away access". You can't really see that as anything else. Seriously, what are you even trying to say here?

The back and forth usually starts with anti-ai people being obnoxious and disrespectful on a game they will not play. They fill comment sections talking about tangents instead of the game itself. As long as a comment is respectful, no one mind that. But anti-ai people think being agressive will bring results.

That said: ai translations will continue to be made and posted.

People want stop ai usage, there are 2 paths:
1 - the productive solution: work on the translation themselves or pay someone to do it.

2 - the nothing-happens way: complain, complain some more, and do nothing.

No one looks for AI translations, specifically. They are more prolific and are becoming more frequent, so they will keep being posted.

As someone said in another comment, and there is no way to sugar-coat it: either accept it or leave for good, because the situation will not change because a nobody left a mean comment calling people names.

Yep. Still up on the site. People don't care about the quality of the translation, honestly. They think "AI = bad", no questions asked.

i dont care if people want to play this machine translated or not. if they want to, thats fine. I'm just sick of people constantly defending it.

Isn't there also a non AI patch for this? Pretty sure it's unfinished

One of the hurdles with this game in particular is due to the English language limitation, unlike phonetic languages like Japanese, English has no rules when it comes to pronunciation, so when you type words to make the characters speak they won't recognize all the quirks, silent letters and inconsistencies.

Think how people made Vocaloid speak Engrish after a lot of work, intentionally spelling words like how they would be pronounced which ends up sounding awkward at best, the only way to fix this issue properly is to hack the voice system in the game and add an English dictionary which requires reprogramming the audio system entirely, not sure how they got around that.
I have no problem with voices, in fact I like them

I'm actually with you on these two points, but again you are punishing the wrong audience and targeting your anger in the wrong direction, AI is like a rope or a knife, you decide wither you wanna use it to help others or harm them, be mad at the governments and corporations, don't bully people online for playing a game you have no interest in.
I think kojima said something about ropes in death stranding :)

All those lay-offs across the Tech World speak otherwise.

you know what else uses artificial intelligence?
NPCs in games
the luddites want us to all go back to living in caves bang rocks together and be afraid of fire or else the big scary ones and zeros in computer data will make him real

im only against mtl and all that when it hasn't been proofread
lol @ people still using luddite as a buzzword
AI will delete everything before it progresses lol

I don't get the hate for AI Machine Translations its better than having nothing a Human translation if done right is of course preferable,
but I rather have a full translated copy that I can actually play than to wait until I turn old and grey before a Translation maybe arrives otherwise.

Be honest what you rather play a half finished translation where it becomes a guess game what you click and do or a fully translated version that via machine that may sound a bit weird or clunky at times but is understandable ?

i might be wrong, but this is completely different from using genAI and LLM models.

It's kind of laughable to phrase opposition as trying to "take away" access to machine translations. If vocal opposition makes you uncomfortable and raises the social cost of promoting this stuff, that's how change happens.

I am unlikely to play some random game twice--and most players are like this--so if I unknowingly engage with a machine translation that muddies the original text but is still coherent, then I never really played the game. Human translation is still interpretive but it is more likely to produce something that interprets the original text, instead of simply predicting tokens based on weighted averages of training data like an LLM. "AI" translation is really only good for games where the writing doesn't matter at all. I think we owe one another better work than that, rather than simply meeting demand, treating what should be a community like it's just another consumption-based market economy. Imo the policy of replacing machine translation with human ASAP is a fine compromise. I would not feel that way if I was paying for the bandwidth and storage, but hey, not my problem.

That felt like a level-headed and respectful opinion, and while i appreciate the politeness, i disagree on the author just wanting attention.

He went the extra mile and translated graphics, which means redrawing signs on billboards, on models, on events, using photoshop or any other drawing tool. Which is an extra effort that he could ignore if he just wanted to do a "lazy-complete" patch, only focusing on written text.

And having all the news articles readable makes this probably way closer to what an official release this game would look like. I would not have shared this if i thought it wasn't worth the trouble and the anger that i knew would come my way (not from you, obviously).
Honestly haven't given it a shot until it coming up here. I can admit, alot more effort went into this than what I first thought. Wished the dev went about talking about that aspect instead of talking about all the negative press they got from this MTL (and again feeding off of it too, pre-making a thread on GBATemp to have people hate on it is just such a weird move imo lol). I'll stick with the OG translation personally cause of achievements, and I like the original JPN graphics for the shops.

I'm sorry that you have been getting hate, the best way to talk about the things we don't like is to have a conversation about it.

For those unhappy w this MTL OG translation still on the site ! Just go and play the video game however you want man, it's fun!!

I think in this case people should be more understanding. I played the original partial translation. It's completely playable. But the incompleteness might be off putting for some people. Japanese text pops up in places and you will occasionally get fully untranslated Mii News. It looks like it might be funny but you can't understand it. It's just easier to enjoy something with a more complete translation.

There are a few mini games that rely on understanding of Japanese text, such as Butt Writing. i.e. a mii wiggles their butt in the shape of a hiragana and you need to properly guess the character. This is one place where the original translation shines. The hiragana keyboard is not translated and you can use it to memorize hiragana. I don't know if this translation left it in. But it really helps with the butt writing game.

There's lots of fun stuff in this game that's unique since it was a Japanese exclusive and they didn't have to modify anything for international players.
Movin to the country, gonna eat a lotta peaches🎵

i tried getting into Tomodachi Collection (since it was the only Tomodachi game i could theoretically play at the time), but I couldn’t get into it because the keyboard being hiragana kinda threw me off and I got a bit confused and was drawn away by wanting to emulate other stuff instead. Hearing that this version had painstakingly translated the entire game, despite Language Learning Model involvement (which, i’m not really knowledgeable on, like, is it as good as being bilingual in Japanese and English?). I might be interested in giving this another shot, if I didn’t already have Living the Dream on my Switch, which, i’m sorry, is clearly superior to Collection.

How do I undo auto merge?

"Why are you against using knives to stab people, when knives are also used to cook" type comment.

I don't really care about this discussion, as it is a neverending cycle of complaints coming from people that don't really care themselves, claiming that they care while "fighting" for a cause from the confort of their couchs, by leaving mean comments.

But with that analogy, you're admitting your hypocrisy of using AI when it is convenient, and getting angry when it isn't. I could not resist to point that out.

Have a nice day.

Yeah, stabbing people is the same as translating a video game from 2009, I swear this guy sounds like the ✌️news reporters✌️ at Fox News.
Yes, I'm calling them literally the same level of bad, all comparisons are 1:1. If people like you can't grasp that sort of context what hope does ai have?
