The Steam Machines price just leaked

Much like @Geocide said, with the hike in everything from RAM to GPUs due to the massive insurgence of AI tech being built, you are going to pay a high price for it. Even building a mid-tier PC now is going to be like building a top of the line one five years ago, it's just how it is.

And Valve has to make money on their product. Yes, they have more money than God as it were, but they are still a business. At the end of the day, if you want any kind of computer or handheld gaming system or the like or anything else that uses any kind of CPU or RAM, the price is going to be marked up.

So, as I said earlier in this thread, wait until Valve announces it, and you'll know for sure.
They may do a price cut, however, as they don't depend on their VR headsets, controllers, and the new GabeCube to make money. They make that with Steam alone. So, they may take a loss to undercut the competition, just speculating, mind you.

hmm...that is indeed overpriced, it has it own pros and cons but on this one i don't know if i can agree or disagree with this, i personally don't mind it since it's steam related device which of course a computer but if you compare it to a gaming computer you'll see it alot cheaper than gaming pc (all i know a gaming pc cost way more than 3k but rather it reaches 10k depending on it's build and features) i mean 3k with a compatibility to play games that your average i5 or i3 can't is pretty much a deal but like the op's claim "it's less powerful than ps5 and xbox series x" i think it's not a good idea but what the heck? ps5 cost over 2k, what's the difference on putting one more 1k to get the steam machine?

BomWell, I don't know how things work in your country, but here in Brazil it's also going to be very expensive, and technology is very expensive too. Anyway, I thought you were from South Africa, as you mentioned one day. Sorry to bother you.

yeah it's expensive here too, but sometimes expensive stuff can have a good reasoning for someone to pick it up or it isn't worth it at all (lol everyone told me that but i don't blame you. i always use sa and never clarify what sa stands for lol)

5 years ago was 2021...and it pains me to think that, god damn. I bring this up because 2021 was the year when DRAM started spiking in price again towards its 2018 highs. An amazing person on X posted this image that perfectly encapsulates the rises and falls of DRAM prices over the past 25 years (which leads on to the point I want to make below):

Building a mid-tier PC in 2021 was like building a top of the line PC back in 2016-17 before prices for literally everything went out of control (CPU, especially GPU, and DRAM, though HDD storage memory wasn't so bad). And this isn't even me pointing out the fact that nGREEDia has completely shifted the goalposts of what a "mid tier" card price is with their shenanigans with the xx60 and xx70 pricing schemes.

I just wanted to point this out because my god is time going by so quickly, even though I haven't kept up with PC hardware in years.

I want to reiterate the fact that people missed the boat on building a new PC by about 9-12 months (I believe I mentioned this in a different thread a while back on someone asking about PC parts), if they wanted to build one affordably. When prices for certain PC hardware spike by nearly 3x in the last 6 months of 2025, you know things are going to go to shit really quickly.

The only thing that can really stop this is when the AI bubble bursts (which it inevitably will). There are already signs that there are cracks in the AI bubble with what's going on at OpenAI and the "infinite money glitch" meme. This image encapsulates exactly why Oracle investing into nGREEDia investing into OpenAI investing into Oracle (and the cycle goes round and round) is a very, VERY bad thing. Also, those numbers are lowballing. These companies are investing hundreds of Billions, not just $100B.

Either way, it's going to be an interesting 5-10 years to see if AI crashes the economy, or if the current economic DEPRESSION we are in will crash the AI bubble. I honestly can't wait for the chaos to ensue, because no matter what, it's all hilarious.

Because at the end of the day, if we can't laugh at this situation, we can only cry lol
