The Simpsons is an arcade beat 'em up developed and published by Konami released in 1991. It was the first video game based on the Simpsons franchise to be released in North America. The game allows up to four players to control members of the Simpson family as they fight various enemies to rescue the kidnapped Maggie. It was a commercial success in the United States, where it was one of the top three best-selling arcade video game machines of 1991, The game also features the television shows's voice actors; Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith reprising their respective roles as the Simpsons family.

The game was ported to the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS soon after its launch in the arcades, and was released as The Simpsons Arcade Game on those platforms. It was also released under that title on Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 in February 2012; however, it was removed from both services on December 20, 2013. In 2021, Arcade1Up released a 30th anniversary edition home arcade cabinet.

Those graphics are outstanding for a '91 DOS game. Puts Commander Keen to shame
(Yes I'm comparing Konami to ID back when they were shareware indie devs but still)
The DOS (and C64 for that matter) port was outsourced to Novotrade who would later go on to make Ecco and those PSX Contra games that everyone loves to hate among other things so comparing the game to ID's stuff isn't as outrageous as it might seem at first glance.

Then again, I suppose all they had to do was trace over the sprites that Konami originally made so there's that.

I played the DOS one a lot as well the arcade. I liked the arcade one so much I used to 1 cc it all the time in the arcade (and gather up a crowd) even at it's highest difficulties on the non Japanese version which only gave you a handful of recovery items. This was the first game that really got me into beat-em-ups in the arcades (just about the time people were getting into Street Fighter 2 which I didn't get into until I finally got the SNES version)

But I really wanted a home version of it and the MS-DOS version was the only one I could get.

In my headcanon back then, the arcade game was going to be the last episode of Simpsons (which I don't think is going to happen anytime soon...)

I only played the Arcade version but for some reason it was only ported for Commodore 64 and MS-DOS but for arcade-based ports from the iconic game of the Yellow Family they are not bad.

I figure it wasn't ported to consoles because another company than Konami had the Genesis and SNES rights to The Simpsons, so we got shitty Simpsons games instead.
It's one of my least favorite of the Konami 4-player beat-'em-ups, along with Astérix. I liked The Simpsons (the early seasons anyway), but I just don't think they make sense for a beat-'em-up so I can't really get into it. It's still well made, though.
