Today was a big day for my PS1 collection, as I added what is, without a doubt, the coolest item I now own from that console.

Inside this embossed tome is the entire Namco Museum series. All five volumes, plus the JP region exclusive “Encore” which was the main game you got with this collection.

The box is a minimalist beauty, sporting this nice, matured design that presents the package with the grandeur and bombast that it deserves. Little additions like the Pac-Man and ghost on the inner foldout really elevate the whole experience. Also, make note of the label, as most of these that I’ve seen online are missing it, and I’m so happy to say mine has it still (though it’s definitely seen better days.)

And, of course, inside are all the collections! Also included is what appears to be a thank you from the developers and a history of the Museum project so far, as well as a place to put a memory card (which you already know I will be doing as soon as I get the chance). My Encore disc is factory sealed though! Cool, but I’m hesitant to open a sealed PS1 game after all these years, since I know how much of a rarity that kind of thing is to find in the wild now!

For those not in the know, Namco Museum on PS1 was more than a simple rom set with a cute front end. The games feature fully 3D digital museums that you walk around in first person. They go all out with the presentation. I also think, and correct me if I’m wrong, that the team who made these collections were many of the people who had worked on these older titles? You can definitely tell they didn’t fully grasp the PS1’s hardware in the first volume, but as the games go on you can see the developers get more and more ambitious with the environments.

I promise to take very good care of this collection! It’s a prized possession of mine now and I would hate to see any part of it get damaged in any way! I’ll play them in a PS3 for now, but this is my call to action to region free my PS1 console, as that’s where these games deserve to be played.

Also, to whom it may concern, this thing is HUGE!

It’s nearly the height of a US long box with a standard jewel case stacked on top! Certainly doesn’t fit on my PlayStation shelf in the vertical orientation.

Very cool. I love this series since they didn't use emulation and instead just straight up remade each arcade game for PSX.

I decided to play a bunch of Volume 4 tonight. Played a lot of Pac-Land, The Genji and Heike Clans, and Ordyne. In the Pac Land room in the museum, there’s a fun minigame where you can find the purple ghost from Pac Land in multiple places, until she appears behind Pac-Man’s family on the beach. Then you find a power pellet in the trees, give it to Pac-Man, he tips his hat at you and he scares her off. As a reward, the little fairy from Pac Land gives you the ability to jump by pressing circle. It’s such a cute little event and that’s the kind of thing that makes these Museum games in particular so special, because they’re clearly made by the same people who made the original games and they LOVE THEM.

By the way, FIRE UP AN EMULATOR AND PLAY THE GENJI AND HEIKE CLANS! TRUST ME, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
