Snowboard kids was really cool.
Also this was a trap to talk about the awesome state of N64 FPGA. It's really great right now. I legit don't know any n64 emulators as good as FPGA. Though the price of real N64 consoles and games isn't too bad! Considering that the N64 was one of nintendo's higher priced consoles at the time and they even stepped back and gave out a free game in England.

The n64 had a bunch of games with that chill, cartoony vibe to them. Chameleon Twist and Beetle Adventure Racing are another two that come to mind.

It's cool there's high quality n64 FPGA devices but I really don't get the whole n64 emulation is bad thing. I think people are just using those shitty Chinese handhelds to play them and basing their opinions on that. Even my 11 year old laptop with an integrated Intel videocard running Linux can play n64 games at full speed with no emulation issues. I dunno what the hell everyone else is using to play them where they have all these problems but it must be worse than that.

A free game in England? I've never heard this before, do tell me more.

Here in the US, second hand prices are starting to get a little silly. You can get most games for a reasonable-ish price still, but some are just nuts. I've got a buddy who's been slowly putting together a complete US N64 set for like a decade and he's down to four games left, and total they will run him at least $1000 if not closer to $2000. It's wild.

If I recall correctly as a child, the n64 was priced very high here and they dropped the price fairly soon after launch. Anyone who bought it before the price drop was offered a free game from a selection that included wave race.

Here's a news article from the day, but doesn't mention the loyalty scheme.

The first Custom Robo on N64 is such a delight, it handles so much closer to the gamecube entry than i expected honestly.

I had never given 1080 Snowboarding a chance until I found a cheap Japanese copy earlier this year.
Its vibes match so well with the system. I now hold it as a truly great racing game.
I came across that one like yesterday, would you say that it's hard to learn? I read online that the controls can be a bit strange at first.

Oh, it’s definitely rough to learn at first, though not because of poor design. It’s just one of those games you have to give your time to. I remember REALLY sucking at first, and I still can’t reliably pull tricks off, but I’ve stuck with it because I just know that it’s worth it to do so! Much like real snowboarding, I suppose.

I have a fondness for the N64, it was THE console of my childhood.

When I think about the N64 I remember waking up on a saturday, having cheese and ham sandwich with chocolate milk and playing Smash Bros, Mario Party 2 and Pokemon Stadium 2 with my friends. Good times

I have to say, even loving the PS1 and Saturn far more, the N64 was the first fifth Gen console I owned. Being younger, I sought it out thanks to what I saw online, and was able to form memories in my youth with Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, F-Zero X, Star Wars Episode 1 racer, Pokémon Snap, Banjo Kazooie, Pokémon Puzzle League, and several others.

The key thing I think the N64 is good at, and the thing Nintendo in the west was able to leverage to keep the console from floundering as hard as its Japanese counterpart did, was market the console like a toy. Multiple color variations, colorful cartridges, and its general design language is perfect for a toyetic aesthetic. And it helps so much for the console, especially as an adult looking back at it with fondness.
