An old friend of mine admitted feeling distant and hurt in relation to me, thanks to my inaction regarding certain matters. Wouldn't even be the first person I lose this way.

Depends on what the 'matter' was. Maybe its something you shouldn't feel bad about. Unless it was super serious, friends shouldn't be guilt tripping you either.
I guess what I'm saying is, cheer up people suck either way
