Yo,
so recently I started playing Ghosts 'n Goblins for the NES, which is touted as one of the hardest games ever made (it even boasts as such on the wiki page) and I've gotta admit, it's pretty tough!
But it's got me thinking about what really are the toughest games ever to get an official release.

Whilst Ghosts 'N Goblins is kicking my ass, I wouldn't consider it one of the hardest I've tried. For one thing, when you run out of lives, you can just continue from where you left off (and even from the most recent checkpoint!) Whereas there are some games - mainly older titles, that give you 2-3 lives and that's yer lot. You lose them, you start over, without so much as a "Tough luck, buddy".

So, what do you reckon are the hardest games you've ever played or heard of? And what's the toughest game you've ever beaten legitimately (i.e. No cheats or unintended skips etc.) Bonus points if the game has no difficulty adjustment options, and where dying isn't "the point" of the game.
Oh, and I know there are plenty of games out there that simply cannot be beaten due to a design flaw, and I'm personally not considering those. I'm talking about games that have a definitive ending that can be reached through skilled play, or by having a comprehensive knowledge of the game's tricks and traps.

For me, I've never beaten Altered Beast or Taz-Mania for Sega Genesis. Pretty shameful as well considering Altered Beast only has 5 levels! I know there're harder games out there than those though...

The modern Ninja Gaiden trilogy on Master Ninja difficulty are among the most hair-rippingly hard 3D Action games ever made. The games throw everything at you, death is often only a single slip-up away, and using exploits and cheese becomes near mandatory.

Who's that, and what're they from? I'm guessing Street Fighter from the looks of him!
That is General, and no he isn't from Street Fighter. He comes from Kaiser Knuckle.
He's infamous for being an incredibly fast and cheap boss to the point even most pros probably can't beat him

I can

I can't wait to play these. I always get confused as to what version to pick up though...hmm...

In keeping with hack 'n' slash gameplay though, Nelo Angelo 3 from Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die difficulty is so SO. GOD. DAMN. SOLID I must've burned through 60 yellow orbs and multiple re-loads before I finally took him down. And then Nightmare 3 and Mundus 1 + 2 aren't much easier either!

Yeah that looks pretty infuriating...I hear Seth(?) I think they're called is another extremely tough fighting game boss.
The hardest I ever beat was Shao Khan in UMK3. Don't think I'll be doing that again in a hurry! I never beat the final boss of Justice League Task Force for Sega Genesis (Darkseid I think) I only once beat the penultimate fight, a clone of your character (I played as Flash) and that took hours of practice

NG is pretty confusing on versions. The Master Collection has NG1 Sigma and NG3 Razor's Edge, which are good versions to get. NG1 Black is *very slightly* better, but not so much that's it's necessary imo.
NG2 Sigma isn't the best though, and you're better off either getting the new NG2 Black or tracking down the Xbox 360 vanilla NG2. Avoid NG 3 vanilla at all costs, it's the only one I would say is legitimately a bad game.

Some of you are gonna call me pvssy but I still find DMC 3 kinda challenging.

But of course, Megaman X6, the worst designed game I´ve ever played.
DMC3 is hard as hell, especially on higher difficulties. The chess board, the final Vergil fight, the ARKHAM fight which pretty much requires you to Grenade launcher spam if you want to have any chance of winning. Proper tough. Oh, and the room with all the marble scythe enemies you have to get through on one of the final levels which takes forever!

What's the deal with Megaman X6? I've only played the first original 6 and enjoyed them. Growing up I never realised there were so many Megaman games out there

The General is so incredibly difficult and busted that the first documented win against him wasn't until 2009!

Ninja Gaiden 2 (Talking about the NES games)

Ninja Gaiden 1 is bearable if you know the tricks and use the RIP Enemies patch and the Restoration that let you have control midair and Ninja Gaiden 3 is harder than hell, but the Japanese version makes it easier while being still challenging, ¿2?

Gimmicks that make the stages unnecesarly hard, sword sucks, hitboxes are a tedium to deal, bosses with patterns that make bad romhack bosses fair (The final boss has a second form in which he keeps dropping rain that not only is hard to dodge, but the boss' hitbox is uniquely awful and he spits a practically homing ball) and the seventh act was made by a disgrunted worker

I love the Ninja gaiden trilogy... except 2, the only one i had to beat with savestates and i don't give a shit

Haha then you know it's gonna be brutal if the Dev's are gonna take out their rage on the player base. I've definitely felt that in game design before. Where you can tell the Dev's are actively hostile towards the player

Etrian Oddysey and 7th Dragon, through I guess its more about the games being a grindfest
Etrian Oddysey intrigues me more and more as time passes, and I can't say I've really heard of 7th Dragon!

I hear Baiten Kaitos is also rather tough. The hardest turn-based challenge I've accomplished is beating Satan on Hard difficulty at the end of Digital Devil Saga 2, which took me *months*

I agree, BUT Sister Friede from Dark Souls III DLC and the King's Pets from Dark Souls II are both absolutely brutal fights, especially if you purposefully don't level up your char.
Me, still on DS1 Remastered, who got severely pissed with Capra Demon prior to Stone Knight Armor and burnt out for a while before finally beating Ornstein and Smough (Super Pikachu saved for last):

If you can overcome the BS that Capra Demon fight throws at you, you can beat it all! I think I got very lucky in the Ornstein & Smough fight, plus I'd played other games in the series beforehand. But I REALLY struggled to take out those headless gargoyle enemies with the crescent moon sceptres. Those things took me dozens of attempts each. Also, I felt like I got extremely lucky with the final boss. When I finally beat them I didn't feel like I'd learned their moveset properly, and I struggle to get parry timing down in DkS. I just scrambled to stay alive. Not a single estus flask left by the end of that one.
