2011/dec. Throughout that year, and perhaps also during a good part of 2010, I played a lot of Sonic Heroes on the PS2, so much so that I already had all the emeralds and 99 lives, with almost all the teams completed, except one: Team Dark.
I remember that before that December, I had already dropped Sonic Heroes, returning only occasionally because I couldn't remember the reason why I had dropped it, and once I remembered the reason, I would drop it again, frustrated.
There was a level of Team Dark, the Halloween/horror themed area, where I remember there were robots that could become invulnerable to attacks and that looked like witches. In that level, spheres would occasionally appear that, when touched, would begin to float a little or would stick to the ground in case they were already floating. These spheres would cause the stage to be inverted, that is: the floor would become the ceiling and vice versa.
In one area of the level there was a central sphere and three more, which, when touched, would make enemies appear and the bridges back to the central area would disappear, which left me confused. That is, until I decided to turn to YouTube, thanks to which I discovered that I had to use the characters' abilities to get back to the center... thus ending my prolonged stagnation and the beginning of the end.
After that, I finished the game with Team Dark and, again through YouTube, I discovered that the final part was hidden on the right side of the screen. That December night, I began the battle against Metal Sonic.
I won't lie, my 99 lives tanked. I lost quite a bit while I was still in the early stages, fighting with the teams, but eventually, I got to the end and there it was, a boss that was extremely imposing to my 8-year-old self: Metal Overlord.
So the battle began, although with the TV volume turned down a bit, since Mom was sleeping in the room where the PS2 was. Anyway, that didn't stop me, and while LET ME SHOW YOU JUST WHAT I'M MADE OF was playing, I hurried to beat Metal Overlord as soon as possible, definitively ending that night with Sonic Heroes on PS2.
The victory was... the best, I was excited and I don't remember how I fell asleep, but I managed to sleep. The next day, a little calmer, but still happy, I put the game in the ps2 and... it didn't work.
I tried several times for a few more days and it was useless. The battle against Overlord was literally the last one and when I realized that this game would not work again, I was filled with a strange and incredible feeling: it was a long, exciting and intense adventure that was over and that only happened once. I like to think that the disc did not hold the epicness, but I guess something else happened xD
It's almost 2025, 13 years have passed since then and I remember that pretty well, despite my bad memory. I literally haven't played Sonic Heroes again since then, not because I don't like it, but because I feel like it was something very special and that it will be ruined if I play it again soon. I have no plans to play it again anytime soon, although maybe someday in the very future I will update that save, the oldest unupdated save on my memory card.
Anyway, I hope this isn't too long... don't delete me, pls!
I hope you had a happy holiday, whether with your family, alone, with your dog or your cat! What matters is that you had a good time!
