I’m sad, but not surprised that a thread hasn’t been made for this series, so here we go…
YOU GOT BOOST POWER!!

F-Zero is the hyper-fast, hyper-aggressive racing series by Nintendo whose appeal is as hardcore and niche as it is beautiful and powerful.
You control a variety of colorful pilots and their accompanying machines as you blast through death defying race courses at thousands of kilometers per hour. And don’t think you just have to race fast to win: you also have to survive. Your machine has a health bar and when it goes down all the way… your firey death is assured. However, on the second lap of every race, you gain the ability to boost at the sacrifice of some health. And there are dedicated spots on every track to heal up. So, the game becomes a balancing act between racing well, boosting at the right times, and perhaps even smashing into your opponents to clear up the competition.

The series has TRAGICALLY become most well known for its neglect by Nintendo over the last two decades. That sucks, because F-Zero is worth more than a meme about Nintendo’s IP usage. F-ZERO IS FREAKING AWESOME! So, this thread is my personal tribute to this series that I love so much. Discuss these games! Recommend gameplay strategies to new fans! And hopefully we can help foster a little F-Zero community, all right here on RGT.

If you’re looking to play, GX is a perfect game to test out the Dolphin emulator with. X is the same for Project64 and other N64 emulators. The original game is perfect for testing mode 7 compatibility on SNES emulators. And the GBA entries (there’s three!) are perfectly intense racing action to be put on any GBA emulation devices you may have!
And, you know me, the original hardware ALWAYS has its place and is my preferred way to say WOAHHH!!! YOU’RE WAY OUT IN FRONT!

Praise be to F-Zero! Nintendo’s best kept secret!

F-Zero X is my favorite. I like the colorful minimalist N64 graphics and I love the music.

FINALLY SOMEBODY WHO AGREES WITH ME!
Yeah, X is the peak in my eyes, especially the Expansion Kit release which is legitimately just more of X. No shade to the other games in the series! But X is my favorite thanks to the awesome art direction, soundtrack, and the fact that the gameplay is more boost based rather than attack based like in GX (I’m bad at the attack mechanic. Skill issue gamer moment -_-‘)

I remember trying it out on an emulator back in the day.

Wasn't all that impressed by it, but I could see why people loved it.
I kinda think the tragedy of F-Zero is that it’s the most SEGA-like Nintendo game.

Which is code for “you get as much as you put into it”.
I wasn’t impressed by GX at all when playing on Emulator. I was inspired to make this thread because I finally really sat down with it today, and I managed to understand it after taking the time to go through a full cup and then come back for more. The series is just kinda like that, and it’s no surprise to me why it doesn’t have more fans when it already has an… off-putting style to say the least (for a Nintendo game. The artstyle is amazing, but we have to consider most Nintendo fans don’t like anything that isn’t hyper cuddly)

Mute city 1 just gets me going every time.

THE FIRST GAME’S COMIC STYLE AAAA!!!

Fun fact: I owned the Super Famicom game for a brief time, all boxed up. The manual had the comic in it that the U.S. release had, but with little numbers next to the English speech bubbles. In the back there was a numbered translation for every line in the comic. Very odd way of doing it, but at least all regions got to see Captain Falcon with his famous Glock.

I used to go to supermarkets just to play F Zero at a snes kiosk the early 90s were great for shop play.

That's literally a Sonic song! ::winkfelix
And back when the series was made by almost the same team who was behind Mario at the time…

LITERALLY literally a Mario (Kart) song.

I wish I was better able to look past superficial things like graphics, but unfortunately I cannot enjoy X. It's not a problem with the gameplay. In my opinion, the N64/PS1 eras were a sharp downgrade in how games looked. Could never gel with early 3D and that affected my experience with every game I played. Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Crash, Spyro... the list goes on. Poor X is just a casualty of this. Hopefully one day I'll be able to look past the polygons.

With all that said, GX is the peak of the series for me. So much of the presentation reminds me of the Sega arcade racers I love. This makes sense. Sega developed the game with oversight from Nintendo. So GX is a strong contender for best racing game I've ever played. And honestly? I feel like it's partially a blessing that we've never gotten a followup. I feel like I'd just be disappointed with the result. Nintendo doesn't like to resurrect franchises without adding a gimmick to make things fresh. I don't think that's necessarily bad, but GX doesn't need this approach. The best thing I could ask for is them deciding to rerelease the game with added courses.

Aside from GX, I really like the mechanics of GP Legend. Blast turns in particular. Mashing accelerate to take tighter corners doesn't sound impressive on paper. However in practice it really engages me. Must be unlocking something primitive in my brain. Monkey smash button, monkey happy.

f-zero and jet moto always loved one another
sadly they did die in each others arms
imagine my sadness
but there will always be memories, and f-zero and jet moto will always exist together forever in our hearts

Okay so... I actually became a F-Zero fan thanks to the anime! I started watching Falcon Densetsu, ended up liking the characters, the races and the crazy universe, and I decided to give a chance to the franchise.
I already knew Captain Falcon before because of Smash Bros. and all that jazz, but only after I decided to look closely into F-Zero that I discovered that yeah, this franchise is something really special ^^
Also, Super Arrow and Miss Arrow are relationship goals in the anime, they are the cutest couple çwç
IN FALCON WE TRUST!

Last year I've played F-zero SNES, X and GX on the actual hardware for fun. I've also played the three GBA games on the NSO (but I have an english translated version of Climax) and I even got to try F-zero SNES with the MSU-1 and HD Mode 7 + widescreen to get the ultimate experience. I also tried to play F-zero X with a widescreen romhack but I wish it was compatible with the Expansion kit.

Oh and two years ago I had the chance to try AX on an actual Arcade cabinet, I was kinda bad at it but it was quite the experience.

Also if you're interested in Satellaview content you should try that romhack:

We should speak more often of the Satellaview exclusive F-zero.
I like the playlist that salvaged the recording of those

So, uh…

Embarrassing story time.
Whenever I get a new game, I usually give them a clean. Carts get an alcoholic scrubbing, and any game with a case get a full bath (I take the art out, game out, all inserts out, and then wash the case in a tub). This is something I do to have the best looking shelf I can have and also to make sure I’m not bringing as many foreign bacteria into my home. This is entirely a for me thing and I am also very stupid.

So, while I was posting in this thread, I was giving GX a case clean. I put it in a tub of hot water. Well, the water was too hot and it was in there for too long and…
IMG_6538.jpeg

It was F-Zerover.
That plastic feels like the bloated skin of a dead animal. It’s so bad.

Naturally, I panicked and ran out back to my local used game store. Some GameCube game, ANY GameCube game in its original case that didn’t have too much damage on it!

And the cheapest game they had which fit those specifications was…
IMG_6539.jpeg

So, my F-Zero GX is now inside the case of Lego Star Wars.
This is a secret between us. Tell nobody.

Probably why GX just is a Sega game. It's made by the Monkey Ball team.

Playing F-zero X with the Expansion Kit thanks to the ability to emulate the N64DD felt great but it's a shame it isn't on the NSO to make it available to more people that don't always know how to tinker with emulators. Is there a better 64DD emulator other than PJ64DD?

While I have no idea what to share about, I think I would leave my thoughts about the series.
(Disclaimer: So many texts, :P)

The first time I discover F-Zero, it all began from Maximum Velocity, since I was looking for a GBA racing games out of spite back then. It is not really enjoyable at the first time, but I slowly learning how the game works, which makes the game being quite alright to be played.

Several months after, I found Climax, a total improvement from what I played last time. There are so many features in the game, making me starting to be confused where to start. It took me about a month to knowing the fact that boosting can be done several times in one lap (unlike Maximum Velocity), but sacrificing the durability of the machine itself. What makes it much more better is the *Track Editor*. While it's not much pieces to be added, but it's really great to having the editor. :D

After almost a year to perfecting the game (which I still stuck somewhere), I got bored and looking for other media, until I found the fact the series have then anime version, titled "F-Zero: Falcon Densetsu" (or known as F-Zero: GP Legend). I took about a week or so to watching the entire episode, and I could say, it's one of the greatest anime I ever watched. While it's not graphically impressive (comparing to recent animes) and few silly parts of the episodes, I still somehow enjoyed it in the end. Overall, it's really awesome that I couldn't talking much about it.

Oh, and the game version of GP Legend? It's decent. It's similar to Climax, but has slight advantages and downgrades comparing with Climax itself. I can't talked much about it since I'm being less enjoying the game, but it's worth to give it a try.

As for my favorite machine/character, I like Misaki Haruka's "Moon Shadow" the most, as it's the most balanced machine I used in-game. In terms of character's personality, Samurai Goroh would be my pick, since I like him in the anime version, figured being quite a badass character.

Overall, F-Zero is awesome in many aspects, but Nintendo kind of "lazy" (I don't know what should I type) with the franchise. Even so, I don't really want to brag about it. Unfortunately, I can't play F-Zero GX yet because the current phone I use can't handle Gamecube emulator, but someday I will give it a try and update this message one day.

Thanks a lot for reading this far. And have a nice day out there.
(I'm sorry for so many texts. Please don't hit me with a Falcon Punch or something. :) )

You’ve made me want to play the GBA games! They’re the ones I’ve ignored the most (I’ve even played AX at least once), and you’ve given me a good excuse to play them! I’ll probably load them up on my PSP when I get a new battery for it, as that’s my current favorite device to emulate GBA on.

Not that I know of? Honestly, an actual N64 and a SummerCart64 might be your best option, but I know we all would like to keep things free if we can.

(This is actually the main reason I rebought an N64: emulation for the console is just not perfect and it looks like it never will be 100% :p)
