This machine, from the research I’ve done, was what changed the game. It maybe didn’t introduce, but definitely popularized these novelty sit down cabinets. And, as somebody who had the pleasure to sit in the later After Burner and Rad Racer cabinets, did so in a luxury way.

I think the problem with these machines is their longevity. It costs so much to fix one and bring back the magic of it, so many arcades don’t bother. This applies to so many SEGA arcade games: the old guard hasn’t done a good enough job of preserving and serving these machines to the youth. And they shouldn’t have to. It should be the company’s job to make these machines last, to provide affordable fixes, to keep their legacy alive in the best way possible. But that’s not SEGA. That’s never been SEGA. Which sucks, because when they DO invest in preserving their history with the gravitas that it deserves, it’s something for the ages.

Sadly as well, that preservation is often costly and enthusiast grade, so it’s not picked up by as many people as it should. I remember being stunned by how low the sales actually were for Sonic Mania, and that’s not the only time I’ve felt that way about that kind of project.

Outrun, Space Harrier and even Hang On would like to have a word with you!
