N64 Talk about any N64 game that isn’t one of these 25

So, we already have two of these threads, and I really want this to be the last one, but somebody brought it up and @Another Iori replied with Broly laughing at his phone, so I saw that as a challenge.

To be honest, the N64 actually DOES need this kind of thread. This console’s discussion is very centralized, and many people think any game that isn’t one of a central few all suck. That’s not very fair, since there’s actually a solid roster of games on here even going beyond the famous few.

(I really do mean this is the final thread like this, at least from me. The concept has reached its natural limits before it becomes annoying. Also, since I hurried quickly to make this thread on what was essentially a dare, that’s my own N64 in the picture :3 )

Wave Race 64 is stupidly accurate in its environmental presentation, especially for the time.

There's stages where, among other things, the surface of the ocean turns orange to match the sunset, the fog covering a lake during an early-morning race gradually burns off, a heavy storm creates massive, surging waves, and the tide even rolls in during one race, raising the surface of the water and cutting off shortcuts.

On top of that, the sound clip of whales breaching the surface and crashing back down is so realistic that I swear it must be an actual sample, not just an effect.

As someone who lives by the ocean - and several lakes - I have yet to play any game that gets this many little details right. And this is a game from 30 years ago

Rakugakids
A fighting game about a bunch of kids who find magic crayons and bring their drawings to life. It's not the best fighting game out there but it's one of the few the N64 has.

One of the characters, Bear Tank, appears in the GBA game Konami Krazy Racers as well as Castlevania Circle of the Moon. If Nathan wears the Bear Ring and uses the Pluto and Black Dog cards he'll turn into Bear Tank.

Doom 64, Turok 2, Shadow Man, and Resident Evil 2 are some of my favorites on the N64.

The first 3 have solid pc remasters now, but what made RE2 on N64 magic hasn't been recaptured anywhere. After you finished all the scenarios a randomizer was unlocked. There was no randomizer in any official version of the game besides that one. Even though it looked better on Gamecube I missed the rando so much and didn't play it there anywhere near as much. Only items were randomized (health, ammo, which weapons are found where) but you had to adapt every time to what you found and couldn't just play the same way every time. It added to the replay value so much.

I'm going to have to check out Biorand sometime (if you don't know what that is look it up), but that changes so much that the more "vanilla" randomization that N64 did probably can't be recreated there.

Shadow Man looked better on Dreamcast because what game on both systems wouldn't, but it was a game that actually increased the resolution via the expansion pack without reducing the framerate so it looked and played great on an N64. And it didn't have the compromises of the ps1 version like severely reduced geometry and fps that was always low and sometimes a more like a slideshow.

Turok 2 was also one of the best looking games on N64 with high res turned on, although it didn't handle it quite as well as Shadow Man did (I don't know of any other game that handles high res as well as Shadow Man tbh).

And Doom 64 is my favorite of the old school Doom games. Even with a remaster out now, that remaster would never be able to exist without it having come out on N64 in the first place.

Edit: The Turok 3 counterpart to Perfect Dark's combat simulator, where you play against bots, was also fun. It was the most fun part for me really. And sadly that was not included in the Turok 3 remaster.

Best Puzzle game for the N64 imo. Is a 3D version of Tetris with a twist and very addictive.
