Fans of the classic “Tales of” series finally have a reason to celebrate: on the 20th anniversary of Tales of Rebirth’s original launch, an English fan translation patch has just been released for the PlayStation 2 version of the game. Developed by Life Bottle Productions, this fan project marks the first time Tales of Rebirth can be played in English.

A Celebratory Release

Team Life Bottle Productions has been teasing the patch for some time, and as of today, it is officially available to the public. This much-anticipated release coincides perfectly with the game’s anniversary—Tales of Rebirth debuted on the PS2 exactly two decades ago, in December 2004. Later ported to the PSP in 2008, it has remained one of the few “Tales of” titles never to see an official international release.
The team has been actively involved in the “Tales of” community for years, producing translations, undubs, and HD patches for older titles in the series.

Behind the Scenes: A Journey 13 Years in the Making

The road to this patch has been a long one. Although a translated script by Lanyn has circulated for over a decade, there had never been a fully playable English patch. Rumors of development, attempts, and partial releases surfaced sporadically but never coalesced into a final version, until now.

Team Life Bottle put in extensive work over the last few years on everything from text insertion to debugging to quality assurance. Their dedication reflects the strong fan desire to experience Tales of Rebirth in English without resorting to reference guides or partial translations.

Why Tales of Rebirth Matters

Released by Namco Tales Studio’s Team Destiny, Tales of Rebirth is noteworthy in the franchise for multiple reasons:
  • 2D Heritage: One of the last 2D entries in the “Tales of” series, the game features beautifully hand-drawn backgrounds and character sprites.
  • Art Direction: The late Mutsumi Inomata lent her iconic style to the game, bringing to life characters and environments beloved by many fans.
  • Unique Combat System: Tales of Rebirth introduced a three-line battle mechanic, allowing characters to move between distinct horizontal planes—a feature that calls to mind classics like Treasure’s “Guardian Heroes” or SNK’s early “Fatal Fury” titles.
  • Fandom: Although overshadowed by better-known titles like Tales of Symphonia or Tales of the Abyss, Rebirth has always enjoyed a devoted cult following.
Thanks to this new patch, fans outside Japan can finally appreciate the nuances of the story, the polished dialogue, and the dynamic gameplay that critics have lauded for years.

Installing the Patch

For those looking to jump right in, Life Bottle Productions has uploaded a comprehensive tutorial on their YouTube channel. The video walks through each step required to apply the English patch to the PS2 ISO. While the process might feel intricate to newcomers, the tutorial addresses common pitfalls and is detailed enough for even first-time patchers to follow successfully.

Awesome! I wasn't aware of this translation, and just yesterday I thought about how sweet it would be to play 'Rebirth' in English. My LCK stats must be very high!

You gotta admire that level of passion and commitment. It reminds me of when someone decided to translate Strife (a text-heavy FPS/RPG hybrid) just so more people could play it.

Amazing! Yesterday I realized that I have access to every single Tales of game (one way or the other), so anything related makes me happy.

On that note, is there any other game that lacks a translation currently?

The Tales of the World side games iirc are the ones missing proper translation patches.

Always is a wonderful time to get a non translated yet Tales game finally translated! Hopefully Atelier and Tengai Makyou sagas will get also new translation patches for the games that need still this treatment for the Western audiences.

Tales of Destiny II still needs a translation.

Oh hell yeah, finally, now all that's left is Destiny 2 and complete translation for the 2 Radiant Mythology games.

Zup, Spike! Really love this new look of the website—so many more features and all these classic reviews. Kudos to you, and good luck on this new journey! ::bigboss
