N64 Super Mario 64 Thread

I will say it’s her “first time playing the original version”.
She grew up with it on the Wii U VC. I was always a hardware nut, so I grew up with the 64 version of the game. She’s beaten this game A LOT in her life. She’s literally used the game for language learning by playing it in Deutsch.

This run was “lots of experience with the game, zero experience with the original version”. Still, an impressive PB overall since it was a proper 120 star run with no major skips of any kind. We did the math, and she got an average of one star per every 3 minutes. It was a wild ride!
ooook, so she had some experience.
that makes sense.

Yes, it is a good time.

That's why speedruns usually have various categories.

I find it both strange and fascinating how Mario 64 is one of the most speedran video game of all time (aside from Classic Doom and Super Metroid among) to the point where people are breaking the game in several ways, finding out that there are "parallel universes" within the game (which is impressive for an archaic 3D game from the 90's) as well as people having a borderline uncanny/creepypasta feel from the game (which gave birth to the whole "liminal space" and "backroom" trends) even if it was mostly from the fact it was a game with few NPCs because of technical limitations.

PS: this picture is not from the actual game either.
There's also the whole Mario 64 speed running bizarre cosmic rays thing.
That picture actually looks like something from the B3313 Internal Plexus rom hack. B3313 is pretty amazing. The only thing I can't stand about it is Mario's voice, I don't care if it's based on the original beta, there is a reason those sounds weren't in Mario 64 proper. I would love to know if 3133 has a patch to add the Mario 64 voices back into it.

Wasn't it debunked?
Yes it was. The idea of “bit flip” remains the prevailing theory, but a cosmic ray was far less likely than the commonly accepted reason now: the guy’s copy looked like it had died, been buried, and then was dug up and revived. It’s far more likely to have been an imperfect connection between console and game than a damn cosmic ray.

I wish people used the Ockham Razor more often...

I genuielly prefere Mario 64 DS to Mario 64.

I get that the DPad is less than optimal, but honestly it never felt like it got in the way and the extra content you get on the DS version is legendary. Because this was the first way I've experienced the game, I feel like it's hard to completely enjoy the basic version.

Was actually a little dissapointed when I managed to get all the stars in the 64 re-release on the 3D allstars cartridge. Still had fun mind, but I still think that the DS port gets a bad rep for being worse than the original.
