I think I've played this game and it's a port based on the arcade version, although for some reason the Famicom version controls are inverted (B is Jump & A is Kick), making it confusing for those who play this version for the first time.

On the topic of that box art, I will re-state what the great Palestinian academic Edward Said said (though he was talking about the USA not about Japan where the game comes from, it's very relevant):
