Seconding Alien Soldier and killer7, seeing them earlier in the thread. Also, just Treasure games in general, considering the whole studio was formed as a reaction to Konami falling back on old IPs.

Also, a lot of indies are fairly self-contained; Pizza Tower, Pseudoregalia, and Neon White off the top of my head.

Though it's extremely difficult. Either play with save states, or play a modded version that gets rid of objects hurting you when you them.

Hypnospace outlaw is a great one! I beat it in 5 hours (didn't do postgame)

You are a modrator on a fictional 1998 internet called hypnospace, you dig through people's forums and explore to your heart's content. You do have goals, but they are used to point you in the direction of cool stuff!

I know you said standalone games only, but this game has a spinoff that is very loosely tied to hypnospace outlaw and is an fps.

-a bunch of squaresoft snes rpgs: alcahest, secret of evermore, bahamut lagoon, treasure of rudras, and treasure hunter g

Surprised The Last Guardian hasn't come up, same team as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Radiant Historia is an RPG on the DS from Atlus that's one and done, it did get an expanded rerelease on the 3DS but while that's the version I played there are several good reasons to ignore it (changed art style and the new story content neuters what made the original unique and interesting).

Mysterious Murasame Castle has had various crossover appearances but no sequels, that's an NES action game using the Legend of Zelda engine. Slots & Daggers is a recently released roguelite where your actions are all symbols on a slot machine, it's short and sweet.

For fighting games I will use this to shill Merfight, an indie game where each character has their own story mode. Joy Mech Fight on the Famicom also never got a sequel.
