I remember my original Crazy Taxi (PAL), the GD-Rom seemed doing a lot of work to load gfx and music, and reaching to not impact the awesome fps output

btw i was kinda scared of that loud ZIIIGGG-ZAAAAG of the drive, in the sense that i feared it could somewhat shorten its life

do you remember other games that used the drive like 'grating the bread' :) ?
perhaps it is better play those games via GD-emu or emulation?

D2 had this thing where random encounters would be spoiled by the drive sounding like a jet taking off when it was sweating bullets trying to load enemies. Killed all suspense.

You have to keep in mind that DC is over 25 years old at this point. Those drives are bound to fail at some point and I'm not sure how available replacements are these days. So yes, alternatives are a better option.

Skies of Arcadia is the one I remember making the most noise, to the point that my dad was in another room down a hallway and was like, "what the hell is that thing doing, exploding?"

It's common knowledge, but non-legit games made the drive crankle and scronge a whole helluva lot.
Unreal multiplayer in particular I remember being quite the noise maker.

Apparently Shenmue puts a lot of strain on the drive thanks to the game constantly spinning in there. I recall an interview where the developers apologized for it, but they said it was required to get the NPC routines to be continuous.
