I don't want this to sound harsh, but I don't understand the game at all. Not from a story or gameplay perspective. On a more wider scale- just the general appeal of it.

The gameplay is so average. Not that turn-based JRPGs have ever excelled at revolutionary gameplay or anything, and I will give them kudos for trying to be different by making the movement and combo system more tactical than some. But it's absurdly easy, and near the end game, it boils down to a format of
- Story event, boss, grind. Story event, boss, grind.
Now, all turn-based games typically fall into that, but HDN really hits the hardest there.

The story too. Now I ain't no perfect writer, believe me. But so much of this meta dialogue really feels condescending. I know that games published by NIS America tend to lean more that way- and I could talk a whole lot more about Disgaea. That's its own eventual thread though.
The characters feel boringly one-note, villains and heroes. The designs are good! Nisa is by far my favorite. But when they talk it feels worse.

None of this is offensively bad. In fact, I wouldn't call it bad at all. It's just so- okay.

My question here is- what am I missing, Hyperdimension Neptunia fans? I know the series has a lot of games, so maybe I'm better off playing another. Which I'm happy to do, I WANT to like it since my buddy does. What am I missing?

I've only played two spin-offs, "Neptunia U", a hack and slash (for its kind not a bad game, for me), and "Hyperdevotion Noire", a tactical rpg, this one has been my first Neptunia game, I chose it because chibi design, I like it, and to me it was not so easy :) A lot of stages were quite long and with complex terrain, there were lots of characters to choose from and, though I don't remember the story at all, I played it through the end and I liked it. Of course the dialogues and situations were silly, sometimes, but I guess it's the nature of the franchise.
Also, maybe you're not missing anything, it's not like every game is for everyone and it's not like you HAVE TO force yourself to like it. Maybe you can try one of the titles I've mentioned, if you have a Vita, maybe you can enjoy the different gameplay from turnbased, but I'm not sure if the atmosphere of dialogues will be different from the main series (you must hear opinions from people who played more Neptunia titles).

Moe characters in a console war which consoles are represented by those girls.

That's the thing, you just don't.

The appeal is pure unashamed otaku pandering.

I learned how corny are developers attempt to stop piracy. Naturally Magikone is the best waifu.

You don't need to understand Neptunia, you let it absorb you till you're 5 games and 10+ spinoffs deep, after that you wonder "what the fuck happened"-

Fap Fuel, it’s that simple.

Greatest piece of video game entertainment, VICTORY is the peak when they introduce the greatest character in the series. I love these games, i wish we got more mainline titles instead of spin-offs.

That was one issue I was facing. I wasn't sure whether which game I got would be a spin-off or mainline. Should I try Victory? Is it worth it?

Like what @Asian girls lover said its the best in the trilogy not counting Victory II.
If you were to go down that line, after Victory play Victory II and NOT Victory IIR. IIR removes a lot of the plot and added a VR gimmick for no reason. From there you are like me and everyone else waiting for a next mainline game.

HYPERDIMENSION NEPGOONIA, MORE LIKE

I never played any of these games, but I do recall an entertaining review of the first one in PlayStation: The Official Magazine that described the characters as “14-year-olds with breast implants”, then used that as justification to give the game 4/10. That’s really the only interaction with this IP I need.

Thank you both! I hear Victory is one Steam as a re-release. Should I go for that, or do the one for PS3? Last question I promise lmao.
Its fine. I think they fix some QOL issues but its just a port of the VITA games i think
