So yeah, I’ve been “"""""""suffering"""""""” with my laptop — as you can tell by the huge quotation marks I used. And no, it’s not real suffering, you know? But anyway.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3520 with a 12th-gen Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM. I won’t lie: it’s good. Like, REALLY good. I play pretty much everything on it, and it’s the machine where I managed to run DISPATCH and all The Walking Dead games by Telltale. Yeah, they’re older games, but still — I also use this laptop for basically everything without major issues.

Sure… sometimes it freezes or stutters, but hey, every laptop does that at some point, and that’s fine. And YES, before buying it, I already knew about its flaws. I’ve been using it since July 2025, and honestly… wow. It’s still very much alive, and that makes me happy. As a kid, I was never careful with my stuff, but this one? It’s been well taken care of.
I even named it “J.A.R.V.I.S.” — and no, I won’t even explain the reference

I’m planning to buy more RAM for it. From what I’ve seen, there’s this whole dual-channel thing, so yeah — if everything goes right, this thing is gonna FLY XD
Now, about it overheating… which is one of the things I saw people complain about the most…
Yeah.
It overheats LIKE HELL.
I was literally using it on my lap, JUST READING, and suddenly it got hot out of nowhere.
Like… “congratulations, your eggs are now hard-boiled” levels of hot

Anyway, I made this post to talk about my experience with it and to ask about your hardware too. Feel free to evaluate mine — was it a good purchase? I’m not sure… but honestly, it was between this one, a notebook with an Intel Celeron, or the lower-tier version of this one with a Core i3.

lol, I just realized I didn’t put ANYTHING retro in this post. Totally forgot, but well… here we go.
So, I’m having problems emulating Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and now I’m wondering:
is it the laptop, or is it the game?

I set EVERYTHING to the lowest possible settings and it still stutters.
Meanwhile, Banjo-Kazooie runs at a perfect 60 FPS.
(yeah yeah, it’s a meme, relax)

it MIGHT be the GAME but i DON'T know, RUNS fine in MUPENPLUS for ME

My desktop is an HP Omen from 2017 and it's only in the last year or so that it's really struggled with anything I've tried to run, so it has served me well

Mine is a 6 years old mid-end PC running Linux, I use Arch btw.

As for your problem, N64 emulation is notoriously finicky, or it could be your drivers, check if they need updates, if it gets too heated could be the fans, it might be that it just need some cleaning (laptops are very delicate, take it to a professional), or, could be shaders as they tend to be the most demanding.

Windows likes to use far too many resources by just existing, and modern internet browsers are very resource hungry as well, that could be causing trouble as well.

I have an ASUS Laptop with a i5-10300H, a GTX 1650m and 16GB of DDR4 that I bought nearly 4 years ago. It still plays the game I want to play just fine at 1080p60, but the case is on its last legs. I literally had to seal it with superglue to prevent it from opening itself when the screen is pulled up.

Now I WAS going to replace it this year with a new laptop, but the RAM shortage has kinda put a stop to that idea. I just hope it lasts long enough for the AI bubble to burst and prices to come down...

I'd recommend limiting your CPU to its base clocks. I did the same on mine and now it doesn't sound like a jet engine anymore.

My main laptop is a HP Laptop 15 that have a 12th Gen Intel CORE i3-1215U with 8 GB of RAM and had it since 2023, its not my first laptop though but my first one was very defective...
(Take this from my experience: Don't buy a laptop at Walmart)

My secondary laptop is one that my older brother got in 2019 that I was able to scavenge last year: a HP Stream 14, there were two variants of it...but he got the worst variant of it: the AMD A4-9120C CPU processor variant with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage...

It's not the best I must say that does offer a decent experience with emulation with up to PPSSPP and Flycast as well as with older PC games but it's SLOW with everything!

...As for my main laptop, it was amazing with emulation like with RPCS3 from the last time I used it: Soul Calibur 4 was mostly at full speed at the original resolution with some glitches here and there.

As for PC games, I mostly play older games even now, but I did try Dragon's Dogma, and it ran great at 720p.

But all of this was before I played GZDoom and had my Vulkan driver glitched.
I was able to fix that thanks to this site though. (I wonder where qw90700 went.)

N64 emulation in general isn't really at a great state.
Not even modded consoles like the PS Vita can emulate all or most of the N64's games (though, it does emulate a huge chunk to playable status but to variable degrees).

It is improving but since 1998 with UltraHLE...you can see why the N64 PC Decomp.s / Recomp.s are probably a better way to go with N64 games for most or some people.

Well it´s a budget build but if it´s so interesting to know.
Ryzen 5600 X
RX6600 8GB
32GB DDR 4 3600mhz
total of 8TB storage across 6 discs.
2 1080p monitors.
It can run most games I wanna play and it´s much better than the PC I had in 2023.
