So I just played... Final Fantasy VII

Honestly i think i used cid the least because of this >_<

sometimes RPGs just through some fuckin asshole into your party and you just gotta deal with him (i feel a similar way about angelo from dq8). To be fair a few of the party members grew on me (I didn't really like Barret, but after I came to understand him during the arc at corel he became one of my faves). Cid grew on me a bit, but never enough throughout the story for it not to feel like dealing with an alcoholic uncle at thanksgiving

ooh! that really piques my interest. I have doubts on whether ill like it. i really really wanna like it.
I loved it, he's not only hilariously vulgar and somewhat verbally abusive, he's dead fucking serious about it too, and is a very passionate member of the party. He ends up being more of a comic relief character later, which is too bad considering his potential for a whole arc of his own.

Good. Time for you to recover these other bangers (and also IX as a huge plus), then. Especially if you're coming from DQ.

Suikoden is the one with like a million party members right? And I do really wanna play Panzer Dragoon saga but im not sure if i should play the other Panzer Dragoons first. I tried it but it felt a bit slow and too punishing for such a long game
Yeah Suikoden games you get like 108 possible party members.

You can play Panzer Dragoon Saga as a standalone, and its overall pretty easy tbh.

That's understandable lol. I got a lotta RPGs to play in the meantime. And I cant even run the second remake on my current setup T_T
Giving it a few years before playing remake, that's not really the best advice, if you absolutely loved 7 and find Cloud to be a really intriguing character, I myself found Cloud the most interesting, then you will likely love everything FF7 related except crisis core. Crisis core is the weakest game story wise, it just expands on Zack and I honestly never really liked Zack much as character until rebirth.

Not a spoiler per se, but remake isn't a remake, it's sequel that ties all of the expanded compilation together and actually furthers the original, whilst rethreading it in way that expands on Clouds PTSD but presented it in way I adored, long story short, someone shows up sooner that they should, many, many fans bitched about but it's great, Cloud is revealed tobe an unreliable narrator in the original, these new games expand on that brilliantly, and essentially fix Tifa in terms of her recollection also.

The order I'd suggest would be 7, advent children, dirge of Cerberus, crisis core(unless you don't like Zack then feel free to skip over), then remake and rebirth in that order. Dirge of Cerberus is canonically the last part of the story as of right now, that will likely change with the third game in the new trilogy.

Dirge of Cerberus has gameplay issues as square never made a third person shooter before but the story is great and adds a lot. Crisis core really doesn't add much to the story compared to advent children or dirge, it's honestly just a kid friendly expansion of Zacks story for the PSP, that's it. Played the remake of crisis core recently just to make sure after not liking the PSP one and still doesn't do much for the story even now. I personally enjoyed dirge of Cerberus's gameplay, it's not any worse than most shooters from back then. If you're curious about Hojo and Vincent this is the game that keeps on giving. I don't want to give any spoilers so that's a much as I will say. It's not resident evil 4, but only remake 4 holds a candle to re 4, but the story is great in terms of adding lore.

Kazushige Nojima wrote advent children and the demand from fans for a game that played like advent children essentially, is why we got the "remake" trilogy, so he also made sure to expand on things that he couldn't when making a main line FF game, and he did, much to many, mostly western, fans chagrin. Take the criticism of the new trilogy with a grain of salt, it's mostly bias against it not being a 1:1 remake as the main complaint, essentially it's a sequel that would make no sense to most of them, and has all the FF7 isms that wouldn't fly today tonally, serious to abundantly silly at a moments notice. It is very FF7, even in term of tone and wackiness, just a lot more of it, but also expands things for anyone that loved compilation, which was the only reason these new games now exist. It really couldn't go back to the original 7 anymore after the compilation movie and games, it feels so restricted by the time it came out and being intended for N64 originally. I loved 8 since day 1. 9 is not really the sci-fi FF so I didn't like that much. 6 onwards starting throwing in sci-fi elements and is likely what hurt 16 was the change back to pure fantasy.

I was one of the "played FF7 on release" fans, loved many things about it, thought the overworld character models weren't great though and the story is done a disservice by a not so great translation, this has it's charm for many but not for me, not at the time and definitely not now.

Kazushige Nojima was on of the core writers of the original FF7, but is the main writer of almost everything since the compilations release.

As one of the fans that watched advent children back in 2006 almost on repeat at one point, it made me wish the original was as awesome and I finally have that with the new games but I am honestly unsure if they can be truly enjoyed by newbies or even fans that played the ps1 original that have absolutely no context of the lore expansion across 15 years. They're best enjoyed by having played the original and consumed the compilation beforehand. So fi you love 7 and found cloud interesting and the whole soldier apsect, sephiroth and shinra, Hojo etc. all interesting and want more then go ahead. Whether or not you'll like any more of it depends on why you liked it in the first place

Good to know!! Yeah ive heard not great things about crisis core. I tend to play games in release order so if i play the remakes it will still be a little while, but not years from now. Hopefully one day i can get a gpu that can even run rebirth T_T

I've been pretty adverse to most RPGs for a good portion of my life, but about a year and a half ago, I got really into Dragon Quest and It started a bit of an obsession for me.
I've been aware of the final fantasy series for a while, giving a few of them a shot but never got super far in any of them. Enclosed is a little mini-review of Final Fantasy VII for the Playstation, an open letter to talk about all things FF7, and a strong recommendation as to why you should play it today!

A note: I have only played the original psx version of FF7 so I would appreciate any mention of Advent Children, Crisis Core, FF7 Remake, or other FF games to be properly spoilered. Thank You!

I absolutely have no time to go over every last thing I love about this game so I'll be brief. I absolutely adore the presentation of this game. The pairing of low-poly chibi models and prerendered backgrounds is very cool, and I love how well utilized the backgrounds are. To this day there is nothing cooler than animated FMV backgrounds (hyperbole). The FMVs in general are super cool. I also really like the game's use of vertex coloring. And as for the music, it's very nice, some of it perfectly tense, and some of it perfectly nice and relaxing (After coming home from a hard day of work I find it really easy to fall asleep to Disc 1's world map music ^^;)

As for the gameplay, it took quite a bit to grow on me. I prefer RPGs where the numbers are small. It was weird having so much money around and always having plenty of magic and items was definitely something to adjust to. The game really shines with its real time battles. I loved the boss fights, though the game overall was a bit too easy.

My favorite part of the game by far was the narrative, which is interesting because story is not usually the reason I play games! I love the cyberpunk setting. The Midgar portion of the game really does feel like a hopeless hellscape. I tend to play games as an escape from this awful world we live in, but this one is less of an "escape" and more of a nice way to cope and fantacize about taking control in a hopeless world. A moment that really stuck out to me is when
Bugenhagen was talking to Red XIII about the unsurmountable odds stacked against the planet, and he says:

It really is such a hopeless world everyone lives in. Such an aversion to apathy througout such intense stakes is very commendable.
Of course, I like practically everyone who's played a video game before knew that Aeris(th) was going to die. I saw it coming the whole way through. But it still hit me so hard. Seeing cloud being manipulated, struggling against my controls, about to kill her himself was rough to see. And then that scene I saw for the first time years ago. It really got me. It felt like losing a friend. She was one of my favorite party members, so It affected the gameplay as well.
Cloud is a character I relate to heavily. A traumatized hero struggling with his place in the world, not even sure who he is. The rivalry between him and sepiroth genuinely terrified me. During disc 2 i didnt quite know what to think of Cloud. I was unsure of who he really was, but deep down I knew he was the hero I wanted him to be. Seeing him in the hospital was heartbreaking, and with the game killing off a main character earlier, I had real anxiety that this would be his permanent fate. Anyway, back to Sepiroth. I don't usually get scared by games, the only other game I can think of that scares me is Silent Hill. But every time Sepiroth was onscreen it felt like a nightmare. He was way too powerful, often just appearing out of nowhere, with that song playing every time. Sometimes he literally jumpscares you. He feels like an entropic force that I can't run away from. Which is why Disc 3 hit as hard as it did.
The final boss completely blew me away. Holy shit. I've never been so awestruck at a video game, my heart was beating in my chest, my hands were shaking and sweating. I was trembling in more fear than any game has ever made me feel. But I remembered what I was fighting for, and how strong I had become. This game is truly an experience like no other. It really felt like I overcame my doubts and faced something bigger than I could ever imagine. That fucking supernova animation scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it lol

I could go on.. and on. But im bad as shit at writing and I don't wanna be spammy. This is just my convoluted way to say THIS GAME IS COOL and I wanna talk about it :P
Any blind playthroughs in 2025? Veteran tips for a replay? And who are y'alls favorite characters. By the end my party consisted of Cloud, Barret and Yuffie.

It's so cool to read a reaction to someone playing this for the first time!

I first played FFVII in elementary school, only we had somehow obtained a scratched 'disc 1', which would immediately crash as soon as you destroyed the first reactor. I would play that intro over and over for months and would still find new little details, analyzing things that would suddenly jump out of background and into my little view. Later I remember spending hours just changing the colors of my menu, and every playthrough I try to make a unique one that I don't recall seeing before.

Also I love that you went through with Barrett first time, I feel like for a long time I didn't appreciate that character like I should've, but he's one of my favorites to take all the way into the crater and him raising Marlene for his friend makes me cry now that I'm older lol. I think my favorite lineup is Tifa/Vincent *(I think Tseng is an echo of Vincent, him falling for Aeris the same way Vincent fell for Lucrecia--- and I still think they had an affair and he's Sephiroth's biological father aside from whatever cells Hojo added, but I know that's not really backed up by evidence and moreso just me reading in between the lines, fantastic writing either way and I kind of like not knowing for sure--- also sorry this is turning into a rant---)*

but I'm stoked reading your excited energy about this game and as always it's reignited my want/need to play through it all over again. Cheers!

Happy you enjoyed my post! Its always fun seeing others' first impressions to games, i absolutely love seeing friends play childhood games of mine like Metal Gear Solid and Zelda 64 for the first time. FF7 really feels like the kind of game that i would cherish deeply if i grew up with it. Im glad to play it all these years later though.

Dirge of Cerberus is canonically the last part of the story as of right now, that will likely change with the third game in the new trilogy.
I actually think Dirge is the last game in the "original" timeline. With Remake being a continuation, it's technically a sequel to Dirge.

Edit- Just want to throw this out there on how I want this series to conclude. It's been established that Minerva is the goddess of the Lifestream, and that Jenova crashed into the planet a long time ago as an anti-Minerva or sorts. The last time we see Genesis, he's pissed off and flies away, but Minerva loves the dude. It would be sick, as fuck mind you, if the actual final boss of the Remake series isn't Sephiroth, but a Jenova-corrupted Minerva. Imagine: you defeat Sephiroth, he cries out for his mother Jenova to save him, she doesn't. Then you have to fight Genesis, who knows that Minerva has been infected by Jenova. Then you kill Minerva.

Would be LIT.

I think the Compilation is abandoned and unless they bring it back like Crisis Core, it just will be ignored by the remakes.

FF7 went Platinum quickly and Platinum games were only $30 here
and they were always the best games!

My friend at school had it and he told me is was dumb because you have to fight every time you touch the walls (we had no idea about random encounters) so i avoided the game until i ran out of platinum choices.
It didn't impress me until i made it out of Midgard and onto the world map and i realized the scope of it all.

i did another playthrough recently so i could get Vincent and all the cool Materia and stuff i missed the first time

Omg I love the art you attached to this post. Is there a specific color palette you use, its perfect! Almost gives off this crayon drawing vibe, specifically the blue on Cloud.
