I wouldn't even be surprised if NSMB would've been called Super Mario Bros. 6 when they started the project. As for Sonic they dropped the numbering with Sonic & Knuckles (mostly because it's basically "Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Part 2" rather than a fourth game) and Sonic Adventure, being called "Sonic RPG" when they have started the project, wouldn't have made sense to be called Sonic 4 since it wasn't just another side scroller.
