Far from a rare problem. What do you do about it? What helps you sleep better and more consistently?

Should I just stay up all night or should I get like 2-3 hours? I honestly don't know what's better.

I think even if it's somehow worse, I'd rather have 2-3 hours and know I had 2-3 hours than be up all day thinking about how I didn't sleep the night before. I've had bad sleep for about 20 years now, partially due to working at night and sleeping in the daytime. Haven't found the answer yet. I wish you luck!

You obviously need the rest, staying up will wreck your body and mind. I found that taking Melantonin helped when I couldn't fall asleep in the past. I also found that having a set schedule helps, for example I'll start getting ready for bed at 11:00 and turn the lights off by 11:30. It helped my body get into sleep mode.

As well, I put a blue light filter program on my PC so if I'm on my computer at night, the blue light won't keep me up. I use the program "f.lux" but I think it's an included feature on Windows 11.

I usually go to sleep around 00:00, and get up at 09:00. But it takes me two hours more or less, to fall asleep, and in the morning I wake up early than I would.

I went to a psychiatrist a couple years ago because of anxiety and sleep problems. He gave me 2 pills, Escitalopram and Quetiapine and since then I've been sleeping pretty good. Also, daily exercise, avoiding excesive sugar, caffeine and fat. At night I try to stay away from anything electronic, so I read a book or draw. Everything combined as helped a lot.

IMO, the sad reality of many peoples lives including mine, juggling sleep and work, the maximum I sleep in a day is 4hrs. My daily routine is 2/3 hrs of sleep which is not healthy I guess, sometimes a quick nap is more than enough to get through the day.

Risperidone lmao

I don't like injecting chemicals in my body all that much like pills , honestly how you get good sleep is getting tired , I worked in steel rolling for sometime and while not a long period exactly I found myself exhausted and slept pretty well.

While medication cures certain problems with sleep like medical problems but in general just get tired and exhausted by the end of the day and you will sleep quickly.

drink before sleeping? ?
okay no that's not healthy, ignore that ? (as i say while i down my asahi past midnight)
i don't know when it starts but having hard time sleeping at night probably has its roots with anxiety and tbh i dunno what we can do about that alone, but maybe having someone to sleep with could help get your mind off things?

I'm beginning to think it's physically impossible for me to sleep for more than 5 hours. I always wake up early and can't go back to sleep. Doesn't help that if I know I have stuff to do I'll get restless and eventually wake up to get an early start.

From personal experience, I have to "turn off" the brain from videogames, videos on YT, movies and phone at least one hour before going to sleep. If said movies/videogames are not "relaxing" (example an action game in which you have to smash buttons), it's even better stopping two hours before going to sleep.
You can read a book, pray (if it's something you usually do), petting your cat or dog (if you have one), or just doing something you find relaxing away from devices (if possible, of course if a person must use them for working and cannot do otherwise it's more difficult).

I hope you can find the way to improve your sleep quality!

I live in a place where it's winter for like 8 months a year, and when it's winter, the sun sets at like three in the afternoon. This fucks up my sleep schedule majorly, and I've yet to find a perfect way to counter it.
Excercising during the day helps. I take daily walks because I don't have anywhere to be but home since I work from home right now and it helps alot.

I also have tinnitus, so when it's particularly bad I put on a longform video or a calm playlist to doze off to. I'm usually against it because it's stimulation, but I've felt the need to do it more and more and I've gotten more used to droning it out now.

I also thought the same, but in my case pills work flawlessly... I also couldn't sleep for more than 3 hours, but now I always get a minimum of 8 hours before I wake up, and I feel pretty refreshed. It depends on what causes your sleeping issues, I suppose!

Great....I threw the fine away while writing this huh.....yeah that's what I meant if you suffer a medical condition its fine but in my case? Why? No need for extra chemicals to be running rampant through my awesome body.

Does Risperidone have any side effects? I've been on Ambien but it gave me really bad night terrors.

I'm also taking sertraline so I can't really distinguish which one gives the side effects, but if it's of any use, I haven't:

-had any night terrors like u
-woke up in the middle of the night
-felt tired during the day
-have concentration issues

Let's hope the erectile dysfunction isn't a side effect from Risperidone!

I always feel worse after staying up all night, so I wouldn't recommend it. What's the temperature in your bedroom like? I like to keep my room cold because if I'm more I'm inclined to seek warmth, I'm more likely to fall asleep. A warm room will wreak my sleep; I hate hot weather.

1-3 hours sleep is better than nothing, always. It's at least one REM cycle and keeps you fresh, but sooner or later body will take its own and put you into longer sleep. I wouldn't ruminate on that, you being worried about sleep makes it worse, it becomes kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, if you can find sleep, get it, if you can't, don't worry and just live normally until you collapse and sleep anyway)

If you smoke weed you'll find it harder to sleep without it. It also messes with your ability to remember dreams.

Do some moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes. Do this at least 2 hours before you would intend to sleep. Shower after exercising. Get in bed. Some people cannot sleep in silence. If that's you, then put something boring but familiar on at a volume that works for you.

Otherwise, switch things off before sleeping and then just focus on getting warm and comfortable, not on trying to sleep. You just want to feel comfortable.

Drinking alcohol before bed is actually a terrible idea. It screws with your REM sleep cycle and thus deprives your body from getting meaningful sleep.
