Single games that are similar to MMOs?

Oh I'm not bothered by it - I just tend to assume that a game with such blatant fetish designs is more concerned with that aspect than with being a good game, you know?

It being playable and fun solo is all I needed to hear, putting it on my list!
sometimes you got to catch people's eyes with visually appealing designs to get them in to see the more awesome stuff you have ready for them. it's like with ghost in the shell back in the 80's. it's a good story that makes you think about it means to be human and what would qualify as such; but the box art cover is of a implied topless chick with sunglasses and a gun. and she may or not be a robot.
a lot of people picked it up and watched it because of the cover.

Oh man I actually just rewatched the first Ghost in the Shell movie with a friend a couple days ago - what an incredible film that is.

Another recent example of a film that uses sexappeal to both sell itself and is also centered around it thematically would be The Substance.
Depending on how you approach it that movie is either a sexy gonzo body horror romp or a sexy gonzo look at the exploitation of women in entertainment as well as inter-generational feminism.
Great, purposeful use of eroticism. (Or at least I thought so, as a fan of bonkers exploitation flicks.)

I can't really think of any videogames (maybe some PC-98 games from what I've heard) that go beyond pure titillation though. Kind of a shame, really, there's a lot of potential there.

(Apologies for accidentally dragging the thread so far off-topic btw)

yeah, it is a fantastic movie. i hadn't heard of that movie "the substance" but it sounds like it falls into the same category as well, probably more like agent aika than ghost in the shell; but it definitely sounds like a movie that makes you ponder about things.
and as far as i can tell, it's pretty normal for threads to get derailed and go off topic a bit. it usually gets pulled back onto the rails after a while.

FFXII was called an "offline MMO" when it came out. The .hack// games take place in an in-world MMO but there was an actual MMO release as well on the PS2 (.hack//frägment), which I think has a small extant playerbase.

There were single-player DS ports of both Ragnarok Online and Maplestory. I'm not sure of how they work (probably not too well) but I've always been curious about them.

Oh, there's also an offline version of DQX, but it's JP-only sadly.
