Anyone knows of any simple and active MMO's currently avaliable? By simple I mean that I kind of want to explore the social aspect more than anything else. If they're free to play better.

I'm not really sure what constitutes as simple, but Old School RuneScape is fun. really love it, but it's definitely not for everyone... you have to be a certain type of person who likes more 'passive' or 'grindy' things to get the most out of it, especially if you want to get involved with a community or something; there are great communities and social activities to find, but most of them also involve those passive things. It's very repetitive or routine based in a good way, but if you like that, there's more to do than you can count.
You can access a good amount of it as a free-to-play user, especially the early-game things, so it would be easy to see if you like it or not.

Pretty sure Argentum is still around.

That one was the only one I could even hope to get into at 15, so that should tell you something about how simple it is.

I second Old School Runescape, particularly for the social aspect. Its different than other MMOs in that its not solely focused on the combat/quest grind. Thats there, but you could just as well specialize in other things like chopping trees and mining ore and make good money building those skills into also making gear and stuff while hardly lifting a sword. Really cool game

Nah, Runescape is meant for people who like to pay 50 bucks a month to do a 3-hour grinding session everyday that's basically click shit until you LVL up something. Its enjoyability is limited so I'd say play PSOBB (if you dont mind 4 players per party) or just typical WoW

We've said the same thing, just from the perspective of someone who likes that sort of thing versus the perspective of someone who doesn't!

I never grew up with many other MMOs, so I think I partially like it so much because I had played it back then.

It feels partially like what I imagine the appeal of D&D is for a lot of people, I think. (I've also only had a few opportunities to try things like that...)

To stay on topic a bit, the only other MMOs I grew up with were Nexon games; I played a lot of Mabinogi. It's also free, and it's more involved than RuneScape. I think Maplestory was more popular from those devs, but I never played that, so I'm not sure what the gameplay of that is like. I think some form of it is still up, and Mabinogi is. If you like the anime aesthetics, the communities on there also tend to be more social, though I'm not sure how actually active it is anymore, either, just that it's still up.

I think I like games like this because it's not all combat or action focused, which I guess might be what you meant by social. Like what zibltogt said. But, if you're looking for something action or combat focused, like a more traditional MMO, presumably, then definitely get another opinion..

EverQuest has a bunch of private servers that you can play for free, most notably project 1999. servers are full of old heads waiting for someone new to play with & are usually really friendly

Ragnarok Online. If you want to enjoy the social aspect, just create a new character and sit on any of the major places in any city. I played the game a lot 20 years ago, and I spent many days without fighting, just talking with strangers or friends.

I'm surprised Realm of the Mad God hasn't been mentioned, though it has been many years since I've last played it so it might not be so simple anymore.

The old reliable:

Spiral Knights
It's a bare bone top down dungeon crawler, go as far as you can in a single run, no microtransactions, designed around a part of 4 but you can solo it, extremely cute customisation. The game has been on life support for 14 years, always active despite the small community, the thing literally won't die.

It's a pick up and play game.
I've been playing since 2011, originally got it for the TF2 Hats. Stayed because its genuinely fun.

If you want a truly social experience:

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis
Phantasy Star Online 2 had 10 years of content all free, then it was rebooted into New Genesis which is super new player friendly with it's own 4 years of content.
It an action RPG, real time combat, quests with fully voice acted cutscenes, it features an open world where you can jump in and help others mid combat at anytime.
XP is shared, it has an max invite party size of 4 but with proximity combat you can early find yourself in a group of 20 players all sharing XP and working co-operatively.
The only microtransactions are cosmetic. It has the most insane emote system you can find outside of IMVU or Second Life, you can build your own home (Which counts as a cosmetic) or raise a pet just for fun.
Stay out of the casino I beg you ::holdup It's a Sega game so it has a colourful casino.

Roleplaying is wide spread as the various cafe's, shops and gardens all exist solely to be areas where you can sit and converse.

It wasn't a waifu game, the male characters have the same level of customisation as the females...
But 80% of the players are female.

New Genesis wasn't well received at launch (It wasn't necessary) so Sega eventually made PSO2 a separate download from the new base game as back then people just continued playing PSO2 Classic. Completely ignoring the NG content.
That didn't work, PSO2 proper always pulls in a player count well into the thousands, yet New Genesis's pulls in around the same number now-a-days. Average peak is 1.5-2k on steam, bare in mind that's not factoring in the Xbox, Playstation or stand alone launcher player count.
It's never quiet.
You can also sync your player data to Playstation/Xbox account for free. So it's cross platform. My girlfriend has it through the Microsoft store whilst I use steam. We play together regardless of the storefront differences.
It has Full controller support too.

Can you guess which one I'm addicted too?
Please help I've had four accounts over the last decade on both NA & SEA It dragged me back in so many times Spiral Knights is the better choice but Sega has my balls in a vice run whilst you can.
