Should I watch Madoka Magica?

I'd recommend watching some actual magical girl stuff before Madoka.
Imagine watching a genre's subversion before watching anything in that given genre, nobody would ever do that right?

I remember the animation not really being the best, can't really vouch for that though, I've watched Madoka on tv over 10 years ago.

It was peak Shaft of course it looked good. Almost everything they made up to Owarimonogatari looked great.

But seriously Princess Tutu is much better than Madoka Magica, the story and characters are much better written than Madoka's.

When I watched it as a child I didn’t full process what was happening so I really hated Mytho, I was seething when he became corrupted. Now I appreciate him for the useless pretty boy he is

Subversion of some kind.

Precure.

Or,

Someone remembered they still got the rights for Sailor Moon or Nanoha.

It’s a bit tragic; When something is actually subversive or original, if it succeeds it will often be undermined by its own success. It becomes the blueprints for the coming era of the genre.

I can’t be mad since then I wouldn’t have the original product, it’s frequently how things grow and change. Some will be brave enough to do something different , if they succeed others fallow , some might be genuinely inspired or simply trying to make an easy buck

My friends keep telling me to watch Madoka Magica. Like all magical girl anime, it seems to be very much aimed to a female audience but I've also heard it gets very dark. Should I give in and watch it?

Watch 2 episodes of Madoka, don't just watch the first. Episode 1 is very very very dull, it actually made me struggle to consider watching more. But that second episode onwards, I was HOOKED

Agree. I never heard a peep about it until a few months ago when one of my irl friends started yapping about some "Pretty Cure" show with like 30 seasons. She also told me not to watch the first season first, guess what season I started with

Pretty much this, I personally like Madoka but I don't recommend it if you haven't seen other standard Mahou Shoujo genre anime before.

These look like anime for preteen or little girls. Exept maybe for Madoka and Reyheart.
If some of you want to try a mahou shoujo more mature try Yuuki Yuuna is a hero.

Watch Kamen Rider Ryuki and you will have more or less the same as any urobuchi animes but funnier

Been meaning to get into the Kamen Rider series. I'll watch it after I'm done with Madoka Magica and Tokyo Ghoul
