My friends keep telling me to watch Madoka Magica. Like all magical girl anime, it seems to be very much aimed to a female audience but I've also heard it gets very dark. Should I give in and watch it?

It's a magical girl anime that devolves into emotional trauma and cosmic horror. The cute animal that gives you a pretty dress and let's you shoot pretty lazers? That shit has a steep price in this show's universe.

No, Madoka is mid as fuck watch REAL Peak

Madoka is not your average magical girl show where the main stereotyped characters learn the power of friendship so they can show off their cool toy accessories. It's one of the best dark series I ever witnessed.

But seriously Princess Tutu is much better than Madoka Magica, the story and characters are much better written than Madoka's.

Like @ciro64 said, i also found it Unmemorable and kinda meh
Watch Housing complex C. you'll enjoy it.
Did like Mahou Shoujo Site/Magical Girl Site Rather well tho

madoka is okay. its not NEARLY as "deep" as some people say. it has a really unique art style that does tell you that the creator is deeply troubled, but the themes are mishmashed and there's no CLEAR message.

tl;dr its the ramblings of a madman with a magical girl skin

Forgot to mention, most of the "praised" part comes from the movies, so you will be watching 12 chapters and then the same but in a recopilation and then you reach the part everyone praises..

This is actually a pretty accurate assessment. It's basically the magical girl genre through the lens of someone deeply troubled, and your enjoyment will ultimately depend on how much that appeals to you.

Yes, but Princess Tutu similar to Madoka is also a show that subverts traditional Mahou Shoujo tropes and also subverts Fairy Tale tropes.
I love both, for much different reasons

If you’re looking for a subversive magical girl anime that doesn’t feel the need to do it with gore, watch “Princess Tutu“

Go to “Madoka Magica” if you’re more interested in horror, and a story with a large amount of outside media to dig into.

Best to watch both if you can

Princess Kraehe is much better written and a deeper character than any character in Madoka.

I'd recommend watching some actual magical girl stuff before Madoka.
Imagine watching a genre's subversion before watching anything in that given genre, nobody would ever do that right?

Shinbo's direction carried Madoka Magica so much it's unreal.
I remember the animation not really being the best, can't really vouch for that though, I've watched Madoka on tv over 10 years ago.
