I got late to the party on this game. I'm blown away by it. The only thing remotely similar I remember playing was DJMAX Online a million years ago.
But this game is much more complicated than DJMAX with the knobs and all, plus it means you need a dedicated controller to play it, they looks like this:
my-diy-sdvx-controller-arcade-sized-built-mostly-ahaha-by-v0-t0lgigsqmtm81.jpg

There's also an online service you need to subscribe to to play from PC if you don't have a machine near you (I don't), it doesn't seem to be region locked.
More info about that here: https://voltexes.com/setting-up-sound-voltex-konasute-exceed-gear/

And some videos so you get the idea:

So why does the thread says "Is there still a scene?" well because I literally just found out about this game which came out in *checks Wikipedia* 2012! And most threads and resources seem to be at least 2-3 years old. And knowing Konami I'm scared they might shut it down at some point soon.
Have you ever played it? Is there still a scene of sorts? Let me know!

I think there is a still a scene but mainly in Japan as rhythm games are more popular there

I remember trying to play this once in the arcade, the songlist selection was a mess to navigate and I couldn't find a single song I liked in the seconds they give you in the selection. Truly the arcade experience. But afaik its still one of the most popular bemani games along with iidx and has a decent-ish english fanbase. I wish I had the money to buy controllers for these games, principally pop'n music and iidx, but this one looks fun too if you have the time to learn it.

I only got to try this as a kid and never had a chance again : (
If it’s really still in Japan then it might be worth going there just to experience it

Very fun game, and I'm lucky enough to have an arcade nearby that has two of these machines. For those that don't, I'd recommend using unnamed_sdvx_clone. The controller I use is called the SayoDevice CM51+. I got it on AliExpress for about $40. I mainly got it to play DJMax, but it has 2 (digital) knobs that work alright in USC.

Woah! Thanks for mentioning those SayoDevice(s), all results for SDVX or Sound Voltex controllers returned very steep price tags!
I also forgot AliExpress existed.
I think that setup is good compromise to see if you like the game but don't want to go all in with a $140 controller and monthly subscription.
OFF topic: Which version of DJMAX are people playing these days?

Yes,indeed in Japan there is still a "scene" for this game.
In fact when I was there, there were a lot of loyal fans who gave me the impression that they don't even care if it goes out of fashion or not.

Anyway, when I stopped to look I understood that it's a crazy game... I'm just so bad at musical or rhythm games! ??

Unnecessary anecdote:
I once saw a guy of about 35 years old who before he started playing said out loud something like "Tadaima...Kanade-chan" (?)

I've been playing the real thing emulated.
It works on PC.
With the monitor rotated vertically it's insane.
I mostly used this thread https://www.emuline.org/topic/3577-setting-up-sound-voltex-exceed-gear-data/
I actually used this site to download https://cloud.mimaglows.com/游戏目录/sdvx存档
But his instructions helped me get it running.
It's pretty insane and the songs are better than DJMAX IMO.

PS: This might help others too https://two-torial.xyz/games/sdvx6/setup/

Idk what this is but it looks fire. I'm not that great at rhythm games but I like watching people play. Really neat.

New hardest Ultimate chain: 706
Not perfect, 12 near...

Whoah same. I haven't played yet but I'm intereted as we have a cabinet near our area. Although I'm probably sure my Banapass won' t work on it

I never really stopped paying this since I made this thread...
Progress so far: Today first "Ultimate Chains" (that's no errors) on Level 7 and 8 songs for the first time. Not too bad.

Looks amazing, although i can safely say I don't have the eye hand coordination to play music and rhythmic games, doesn't help that most of the music I listen is Half as fast of that tempo at most.

@Grumpy_Old_Man really anyone can play just a matter of practice. I'm not good yet but I believe it's possible to git gud for anyone really.

As a side not I did eventually get an arcade accurate controller. But let me tell you those things are HUGE, HEAVY and SUPER LOUD.
This was my controller for like 2 days, but sold it...
IMG_20250104_144438.png>
It was a SDVX LITE 3 by Yuancon > https://yuancon.store/controller/sdvxlite
And it is a beast i'm not kidding, you need your full palm to press button:
Length 42cm
Width 20cm
Height 7cm
Weight 3.7 kg

I couldn't get used to it, and Arcades don't exist in my continent, so why bother getting used to an Arcade accurate controller? wasn't worth it in my opinon.

Ended up getting a tiny pico controller.

Pocket SDVX Pico v5 > https://www.speedylabs.us/product/pocket-sdvx-pico-assembled/
Length 20cm
Width 10cm
Height 2cm
Weight 687gr

^ I would totally recommend this for anyone really.

There's also another brand worth mentioning, for small controllers, the gamo2's:
FAUCETWO Portable Edition $99
SV1.png

If I could do it all over again I would go straight to the FAUCETWO Portable, cheapest and arcade size knobs. Can't go wrong with it.

EDIT: above in this thread the SayoDevice was mentioned as an alternative, I've been at this for a bit now and let me tell you it isn't simply because the knobs don't rotate freely on a SayoDevice.

That thing looks right out of an Industrial complex(I wonder how many CRT monitors can make).

really anyone can play just a matter of practice. I'm not good yet but I believe it's possible to git gud for anyone really.
The only "music" games that i ended up decent at best was Steambot Chronicles(Far slower tempo) and that K-on, it helps that you are seeing an actual partiture and the inputs are rather simple.
