I saw a few Hello Kitty mentions today and it reminded me: pre-Hello Kitty, Sanrio made some crazy ass shit!

'Chirin's Bell', for instance, is a movie about a baby ram who is raised by a wolf to be a killer. It's wild.

Other old Sanrio movies include 'Bara No Hana to Joe', 'The Mouse and His Child', 'Legend of Sirius' and 'Unico', all of which are... not very Hello Kitty-like.

Aggretsuko is my favorite show ever, and these movies were a pretty good surprise. Anyone seen them?

Sounds amazing, will definitely look into them.
That said, have you ever seen the older Hello Kitty episodes from the 70s?

It’s interesting to see how different Sanrio’s older works are compared to Hello Kitty. ‘Chirin’s Bell’ and the others you mentioned sound much darker and more complex than their usual style. Aggretsuko makes sense as a favorite, those films must have been a surprising but welcome change of pace.

I haven't seen much stuff pre-Hello Kitty, but I have seen some of the earlier animations. I'm pretty sure My Melody started out as a red riding hood parody like 50 years ago now.

I'm sure I can find them online somewhere.
I just wanted someone to watch them with.
I almost never watch anything that isn't me gaming, or Youtube videos about it.

What got me was that Chirin's Bell started off as a happy little movie about baby sheep playing with rabbits and frolicking around, then it takes a hard turn down a dark alley. It's only 40 minutes long but it's a banger.

I'm down, but I have a super noob question. When I find them, how do I stream them?

Edit- I usually just watch gaming stuff too, so now we're best friends.

That sounds like a dramatic shift! It’s impressive how much they packed into just 40 minutes. I’ll have to check it out, those kinds of unexpected turns are really memorable.

I use Twitch, but I don't know if these old foreign movies follow all of todays modern streaming standards. ::zeldapoggers

I've been gaming all my life, since I was a literal baby and could barely sit up on my own, starting on Super Mario Bros.

SAME.

I'm not familiar with a lot of older Sanrio works; just modern day Sanrio. But JESUS CHRIST, that description of "Chirin's Bell"!!::omgdoom
