No reason you can't start with either SamSho 1 or 2 on MAME. While 1 is a classic, 2 is one of the great's of the classic early/mid 90s era of fighting games and an incredibly important game both to SNK and fighting game history.

My recommendation would be to play 1 first, but to invest time into learning 2, if that's something you're interested in.

I came in like many on Samsho 2, it was on a Neo Geo Machine which only also had Metal Slug 2 on it(God I got giddy everytime I saw the demo play and the whole machine just chug on stage 2)

Depends how hard you wanna get in, Samsho 1 is solid but 2 is obviously a game where they learned lessons and implemented em. Depends if you wanna experience the evolution and history, or just get in and mash some buttons mostly, neither is a bad choice, you can always play 1 later too if ya skip it.

I'll say just start with 2, 3 has bs AI/difficulty, so I can't recommend that, so 4, and then the RPG game, and if you like what you're playing, 5 Special, and so on.

So:

2
4
RPG game

Any ports would do, these games aren't difficult to emulate at all. The RPG game translated you can get in the Repo, and play with RetroArch.

If you want to go beyond that to continue the lore, there's a Samurai Shodown OVA from the 90's, and mangas.

Those are arcade fighting games, it take 15 mins to finish each game
Start with very first one
So you can actually see how it evolve, and appreciate or hate the changes

Either 2 or 4 is a good start. 3 not only has BS AI but it also runs like trash, and 5 has a bit too many mechanics, and 6 has so many different things and mechanics it might give first time players a stroke, lol.

Comes To Story
Just watch a youtube video about the story and lore.
Which Ports Of the Samurai shodown games
You can easily emulate arcade ports. If you dont want that, they probably have Neo-Geo ports because they were SNK games. They probably ran arcade-perfect. I dont know about later collections.

If you just want to play the game, Samurai Shodown V Special. It's the best of the series.

It's well balanced and has enough people playing it in various places. You can get competent at the game very quickly, as it's heavy on fundamentals, as opposed to fast rushdown and long combos with tight links.

If you're interested in the story and characters, go with the Samurai Shodown RPG on Neo Geo CD. ;)
