You can also not bother deploying them into battle, if they're not forced upon you either. It plays similar to Fire Emblem, so the whole advantage/disadvantages between classes against other classes exist. Permadeath can be turned on/off, if you wanted that feature. New Game Plus does allow carrying over all your soldier creations and equipment from your save file, but you have to earn a separate currency to reobtain them, and they reset their levels too.
