What are some of your favorite modern day setting RPGs?

You probably posted it. I think Yakuza 7 is fantastic and the way they explain the RPG mechanics in-universe always felt like a great detail to me. (Like that Ichiban actually takes a bunch of hits because he envisions reality like a turn-based RPG, so they're ACTUALLY taking turns for real, it's not just a gamification thing)

Yeah, also Earthbound like Bakuma1997 said. It's not "modern" but it was a contemporary setting when it was new, so I'd say it counts.

Most I've played have already been mentioned, but Omori comes to mind.

Never actually played it, but looks great. Gives me FLCL vibes for whatever reason, which is always a good thing. Plus the trailer music is pretty sick.

(I also remembered YIIK, but uh... no.)

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is definitely up there for me, especially with the magical realism it invokes. Other than that, maybe Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor fits the bill. I wished that there were more RPGs that take place in a modern setting.

Oh! Parasite Eve!
How did I not think of that first? Back in the day when I originally played it the fact that it's set in modern day New York blew my damn mind.

Pretty great game, though the sequel took things in an odd direction. (and then 3rd Birthday happened...)

That's a great pick! I don't know why it slipped my mind, but it's a perfect recommendation. I curse the day that dolt Toriyama was allowed anywhere near this IP. At least I can console myself that he wasn't allowed near another game after screwing up with Front Mission.

yakuza IS indeed sick. i'll go ahead and add shin megami tensei to the pile, most games are set in tokyo. not a straight kind of real life setting, but not altogether more fantasy than persona as a whole. massive fan of SMT over persona, personally. that time system adds nothing to a game (y)

There's the Persona games as everyone else has said already, and a couple other SMT spin-offs, like Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, and Devil Survivor, big fan of that last one by the way!
The mainline megaten games could count depending on your interpretation, although they do have a big post-apocalyptic theme going.
The World Ends With You is one of my favorite games ever, and also a modern setting RPG, Shibuya is a very stylish place!
7th Dragon 2020 is a dungeon crawler with a modern theme, same for 7th Dragon 2020-II and 7th Dragon Code vfd. The first one is fantasy though.
Tokyo Xanadu, havan't played it myself, I heard is basically discount Persona as an action-rpg.
In the subject of discount Persona, Mind Zero is even less original than Tokyo Xanadu.
Operation Abyss and Operation Babel.
Ray Gigant.
Mato Anomalies, haven't played it, reminds me of Persona but the characters are adults.
Zettai Hero Project, maybe?
Strategy rpgs instead of regular ones, but maybe the Front Mission games.
Dusk Diver maybe? More like a 3D Beat 'em up...
