RPG Maker - Tell everyone about your experiences.

Long ago, in 2005, as far as I remember.
not sure, at all.
I tried, that's for sure...
the one and only (and beats me if it counts), could be final fantasy: endless nova?

(truly sorry, if is not enough information 😅)

The only game I have ever played created with RPGMaker 2k3 is Saint Seiya Densetsu, an RPG game that retraces the saga from the beginning (galactic battle) up to Asgard, Neptune etc. Mediocre and crude graphics, but contains clips, images and original music from the anime. Perhaps one of the largest games produced with RPGMaker: over 2 GB. I played it on the tablet via Retroarch (Easyrpg Player core).

Edit: this freeware game is here:

I never played any RPG Maker games, but I watched Let's Plays of games like Yume Nikki and Mogeko Castle as a dumb kid. This may or may not have altered my brain chemistry.

I think it was around 5 years ago when I first heard about rpg maker. I was searching for short, low spec indie horror games and there I found short games made with this engine.
I just played 3: Misao(good laughs at random deaths), Mad Father and my favorite of the 3:
The Witch House MV
witchhouse.jpg

It has nice graphics and effects, entertaining puzzles, nice atmosphere, good jump scares here and there, you get a frog companion that you can pet but....(???), and a good plot twist at the end that wraps up a good short story.

I only know a few horror games from YouTube created with RPG Maker, such as Creepypasta Land, Ao Oni, Nobita's Resident Evil, and then, Doom & Destiny.

Once I tried to look for a thousand tutorials to create my own RPG, based on one of my comics. It can't be said to be so "popular" to the point of being helped by someone, then the lack of resources to make it happen led me to give it up.

I'm not sure how i first knew about rpg maker but i first used it back in 2008, a portuguese fan translated version of rpg maker vx.
I mostly used it just to mess around, nothing serious, especially because i was 11 years old back then, funnily enough i was never one to play other games made on rpg maker, save a few like ao oni, only very recently i picked some stuff like ara fell and rakuen, which are leagues better than anything i could ever make
I actually started a semi serious project back in 2020 using rpg maker mv but at this rate it will have a longer development time than ffxv, i still tinker with it these days but very sporadically

I've never played RPG Maker, but I bet I would have loved it as a kid.
I'm not sure if I've played any games made in RPG Maker. I think Ara Fell was originally made with it but the current version on Steam that I played isnt, iirc.

I messed with RPG Maker when RPG Maker 95 was fan-translated, but I enjoyed Don Miguel's Japanese to Russian to English translation of RPG Maker 2000. Earliest games I remember were Crestfallen, The Way, and Blurred Lines.
I've tried to make a game myself and it's pretty much a incomplete tech demo of me trying to make something epic.
Can't really recommend a top 5, but Dragon Quest+ is an amazing achievement. This guy worked on a Dragon Quest 1 remake for almost 10 years on a RPG Maker 2003. It looks really good and has so many features!

I first got rpgmaker in a Brazilian magazine called Digerati that had a cd with both rpgmaker2k(or maybe it was 2k3), tons of assets and some games, back when I was a kid. The magazine also taught you some of the basics so I developed a few silly games and eventually they evolved into longer silly games that I used to share with my friends. I lost most of these, only the last one survived, a 2k3 game that I finished around 2011(by that time I was already losing interest in developing rpgmaker stuff and had to force myself to finish it). After that I only touched rpgmaker again for a small update for its 10th anniversary, although I considered making a game in rpgmaker XP in 2019.

Unrelated to that was my actual interest in other rpgmaker games. It all started with me trying Yume Nikki out of curiosity, a game that wasn't an rpg and ironically became my favorite game made in rpgmaker. It got me into the weird rpgmaker subgenre with stuff like OFF, Space Funeral, Middens and Hylics.

My favorite RPG Maker game is probably Alter AILA by Neok. There are two games and they tell basically the same story but vary greatly in execution. The first is a traditional RPG in a modern setting with multiple endings and branching paths.

Alter AILA Genesis is a sort of remake that eschews the branching but refines the battle system a lot (in a Bravely Default kind of way) and has better graphics.

How I wish Neok would remake these in a more modern RPG Maker or even go commercial with them. He did release a commercial game which I did get to support him, but it has none of the brilliance of his past efforts.

As for making games, yes I tried, but nothing ever truly materialize.

I really love using it! mainly RMVXA. I just like making little mechanics and stuff, but lately I’ve been more planning to make a full game.

RM reminds me of an RPG itself in that it’s mechanics are partly Fixed and focused and partly open and free wheeling, it feels like you can make stuff so much faster with making compromises in it. There’s just so much stuff you can make with it without even scripting. (New users think they need scripts to do anything which I think isn’t a good way to start learning.)

it’s important to remember that most people are using it to start game making so there’s a ton of first attempts or practice projects along with more legitimate ones. A lot of times cause they can’t do the graphics themselves so a bunch of games look the same in preview images, which is hard to parse through if you’re looking at them.

from the ones I tried a bit that seemed cool:
Yume Nikki
Omori
Dakota RPG
Middens
Oneshot
OFF
Ib
Gingiva
Empty head
Star stealing prince
Paletta
Midnight train
Lockhart indigo gold
Pocket mirror
The endless empty
Where the moon goes at night

My experience with the actual engine mostly extends to me putting it on my steam wishlist and then forgetting about it for a while. I’ll probably grab it eventually.

When did you hear about Rpg Maker?
What was the first game you played?
Are you one of those who tried to create your own game?
Would you like to make a top 5 of the best games you have played and that you want to recommend?
I got rpg maker 2003 on sale for a dollar, it was a really cool piece of software and I was actually working on a good game, got a while into it and funnily enought the thing that killed it was I was just to ambitious. For some reason I wanted the game to have the battle system of resident evil gaiden, not sure how that wouldve worked because I never got past the games opening. One mechanic was you would interact with an object and your character would say something about it (ex:wow what a great chair) (I think this was also in earthbound) But I did that with so much stuff it took me 16 hours to make a 15 min opening that could be 2 min if you skipped all the side stuff. I even recently took a video game design class in college, I barely passed that class but the one thing I learned is that game would've sucked.

Big fan of Misao, Mad Father and The Witch's House. Glad all 3 got some form of remasters too.
If anyone likes these but hasn't played make RPG Maker horrors games, also check out:

Ib, The Wedding, Skinwalker, The Crooked Man, The Sandman, The Boogie Man, Seven Mysteries, It Moves and The One Night trilogy. There are so many good ones.

I tried my hand at making a RPG Maker horror game. Even with plugins and newer features, it's a hell of a task for one person. Hours of work for maybe 10 minutes of game time.

I was unmotivated at first cause the default resources, characters and tilesets and such, wasn’t the kind of game I really wanted to make. Plus the battle system wasn’t up my alley either, but when I started making my own systems in the comment events, got different tilesets from the other rpgmakers (like modern and sci fi) and started putting my own (really rough) music recordings in, that really invested me a lot more in it, and it became more of a sturdy passion hobby than just a one idea thing.

You have to fall in love with the process before the final idea! 🦭👍
