I've been trying out a few retro horror shooter demos on Steam Next Fest these past days. Like Painted In Blood and Ground Zero are both pretty solid, can tell they're trying to pay homage to those 90s horror shooters. Anyone got other horror shooter recs?

Blood! Blood is the one you want. Play Blood.

Oh and neither are at all obscure of course, but F.E.A.R. is another absolute gem well deserving of its extremely positive reputation. Ignore the sequels though. In both cases.

A lot of classic FPS have a strong horror component: Doom is about a portal to Hell, Wolfenstein has ghost-infested levels and occult experiments, Hexen has dark temples filled with demons...

System Shock 2 remaster came out recently. Assuming they fixed up the jank at the end, that’s an all-timer.

Ooh, also Ashes: Hard Reset. Doom 2 mod from last year, a prequel to Ashes 2063/Afterglow. It’s very moody and atmospheric, easily fits into the action/horror slot.

Thanks, I'll go check it out.

Turok, especially 2

Perfect Dark kinda?

I think the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R trilogy have strong horror element. Though it might not be everyone cup of tea because of the survival mechanics.

Darkwatch for Ps2 comes to mind. Blood was my go-to pick, but it was already mentioned.
Also, honorable mention to "They Hunger", a zombie / horror themed mod to original Half-Life! Normally I'd be apprehensive about recommending mods, but They Hunger is imo on par with an official Half-Life 1 expansion, and it has a completely new setting and re-done graphics.

Condemned Criminal Origins
Seconding this, but amending that it's main focus is on melee combat. Very moody atmosphere and great lighting.

Thanks for the rec! So is the new Heart of Chernobyl worth playing?
I'd say it's still hold up as stalker series yes but the problem people facing is performance/optimization issue. So beware of this if you don't have a strong gpu.

That being said if you're looking for something more focused on shooter, try metro 2033. The game came out in 2010 but there's an enhanced version. I think it still pass as a late retro game.
