PS2 Replacing The USB Ports on A Slim

Is it possible to replace the USB ports on a ps2 slim? I recently found my old ps2 and the disk drive definitely doesn't work anymore, but the machine itself boots up fine! I plan on installing a harddisk with McBoot but... the USB ports were a bit rusty, so I don't have much faith.
 
Have you tested the USB ports? Because rust on the outside metal isn't going to do anything, it's the gold-colored traces inside that transmit the data and power to the USB. A little cleaning with it opened up a toothbrush and some water-vinegar mix or something should be enough.

TBH with FMB, you don't need the usb ports anyhow, you can FTP the games to the PS2
Since you are going to HDD it anyhow.

If you end up needed the USB ports and they don't function (even if not in theis case maybe for a keyboard later for on-line games) a little deoxit in each port would go a long way yo cleaning up those connectors.
