There's no shortage of retro-games to play, and it could get overwhelming to find stuff you may enjoy. Encyclopedia Metallum has these recommendation threads so I thought this forum could have one too!
Wanted to include a few rec charts I got from 4chan but they compress and turn illegible so there's no point there...
A rec request: what are your favorite sci-fi RPGs of all time? I'm looking for pretty much any retro sci-fi RPG.

Anything in particular you’re looking for?
For sci fi rpgs I don’t actually see a lot of people recommending the first phantasy Star on master system. It’s really nostalgic for me.

It's likely you've already played them if you're into sci fi but xenogears and the xenosaga series are great sci fi storytelling! The former is especially a masterpiece!

Personally, I always thought that Phantasy Star IV was the best in the franchise.
Although that's probably because it was the only entry that I was able to finish. Those previous games are hard.

Sad thing is that there isn't as many Sci-fi themed ones out there as you'd hope. Still, there are some titles that come to mind.

I can recommend is Chrono Trigger (due to time travel), Cosmic Star Heroine, the Star Ocean series (even though it's more Action RPG), Rogue Galaxy, Trails in the Sky and it's sequels (thought it's a mix of fantasy with some sci-fi elements), Linda Cube and Sands of Destruction.

For more cyberpunk type of Sci-fi, there's the first 2 Shin Megami Tensei games and Resonance of Fate.

Probably everyone have played this. But I always recommend Mass Effect 1

Also Anno Mutationem

And Dead Space

+1 to both xenogears and mass effect top recomended, even tho mass effect 3 has it's own issues, outside that you can't go wrong with shadowrun or the first 2 fallout

Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 + 2, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, Space Rangers 2, Fallout 1+2, .Hack series, Star Ocean, Snatcher, Parasite Eve, FF7, Phantasy Star IV + Portable 1+ 2 - I feel like the PSP ones are better suited to a single player. Some of these everyone has already played I know! I hope some recommendations are good!

You know what PS2 game I wish more people played?

Dual Hearts

It's an action adventure game where you go into people's dreams and help them with their problems. You also get some magical weapons as you progress that help you fight enemies and solve puzzles. You even get a wacky sidekick to tag along with you so that the journey doesn't feel so lonely.
