Which ones would you recommend to start getting into the series and why? You can even tell me an order to go through.

I'm not so familiar with the RPG genre. Just played some Final Fantasies here, action-RPGs there.

Should I follow written walkthroughs or not? I want to get the best and most complete experience.

Pokemon games tend to be very straightforward, catch pokemon, build a team, defeat the gym leaders and then the Elite Four and the Champion. You don't need to worry about the postgame if you don't want to. If you want some tools to help with your gameplay you can use sites like bulbapedia, it's a pokemon encyclopedia which helps a lot to discover movesets, pokemon available in each region, etc.

i've played only platinum to be honest, but the game is great, it's considered one of the best in the series, i definitely recommend playing it first, or the GBA ones, they're pretty solid. just don't forget that besides the games being very good and popular, their formula can be pretty tiresome if you play another game right after finishing one, because despite having different pokemon to catch, the structure of the games is not so different from one game to another

Either Pokémon Crystal on the GBC if you want an 8-bit game, or its remakes Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver if you want something slightly more modern. They're DS games though so expect a dual screen layout.
If you want a 3D game I'd recommend Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire on the 3DS. They feel gigantic and the world is really fun to explore in that one.

The generation 2 games and their remakes are the best Pokémon games ever made by a million miles and I'll turn anyone who disagrees into a frog!

i'd say start with red/blue/green or the gba remakes firered and leaf green. they are the most straight forward with simple mechanics, nothing over the top but good for a starting point.
gold/silver/crystal are a bit more challenging and the remakes should be similar. they are more open in how you can go about exploring the region but this affects the difficulty curve quite a bit.
i'm not familiar with the other games, other than x and y are considered the easiest.
the mystery dungeon games are good. a mix of pokemon and advance wars.
the staduim games are good for training for the competitive scene.
pokemon snap is a rather relaxing game. you take pics of the pokemon and that's about it.

I played platinum as a kid, always went back to it, but I really feel you should start with gen 5 bc there was so much postgame stuff in BW/BW2

that said, while i don't like gen 8/9, you could start there if you prefer playing the new ones. and im sure newer fans just play the switch games anyways.

They're pretty much all the same. The battle system got a bit better over time and the newer ones have more stuff but any of them will give you pretty much the same gameplay experience. Personally I'd pick a generation between the GB-DS eras and find a romhack that allows you to catch all the Pokemon from that generation in a single game without needing to trade with other players or play multiple games and go with that.

Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon Platinum, Pokemon Black or White, Pokemon Black or White 2, Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver. Any order, they aren’t connected by any means.

(optional) All Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, Stadium, and XD games

I'd recommend gen 2, 3 or 4 for most people. Those games did the best job at giving you that sense of childlike adventure and whimsy that I think Pokemon is one of the best franchises at creating. Go to gen 5 if you want a more involved story that doesn't completely suck even if it comes at the cost of feeling a little more railroaded.

To be clear, all Pokemon games are pretty linear, but gen 2 thru 4 do a great job at masking that and providing just enough freedom and lack of direct handholding that they feel like your adventure.

I'd recommend Black/White as the best overall starting point for someone with no Pokemon experience. The balance is much better than previous entries, with bigger movepools for every Pokemon. The GB-GBA games are still fun but moves are learned very slowly. You often don't get enough to work with without using TMs.

Now don't get me wrong. I do think that limitation has its upsides and I personally love Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. But I also think the smaller movepools would be annoying for someone new to the series.

If you loved Black/White, I'd recommend the sequels Black2/White2 afterwards. And if you wanted more Pokemon after that, go for Heartgold/Soulsilver or Platinum.

Pokémon Adventure Red Chapter (gba rom hack).

Start with soul silver, then play black and white 1 and 2 for DS, then play ruby omega and Alola for 3DS.
And if you want to play Kanto region try fire red for GBA or the remake let's go Pikachu or Eevee for switch.
If you want to play something slightly different try legends Arceus.
Or if you want the spinoff I recommend the mystery dungeons, all the generations from gen3 have one or more games, and are good.
Another spinoff I like are the Ranger* in the DS, worth to try and are fun to play.

To enjoy the games as originally experienced but spruced up, with QOL improvements, go with firered or emerald green.

To go with the most refined pokemon games, heart gold or soul silver.

Also the final remake to add to both of these would be omega ruby and alpha sapphire.

The only games that are considered great but very much unique are the black and white duology.

Soif you want something nostalgic, fire red/leaf green,

Any of these would be great. X/Y are good but not great.

If you like any of these, you'll likely like everything I mentioned, everything else is an acquired taste.

I would suggest against the original game boy and game boy colour games, nostalgia has those propped up on a pedestal and then some. I say that as someone that grew up with them, firered and emerald green long since supplanted them.

Emerald/Ruby or Gold.

Dont get into pokemon. Get into Monster Hunter Stories or Dragon Quests Monsters.
This is the real answer, but if you are still set into Pokémon, I can only recommend Emerald for the vibes and Black/White 2 for being the most complete of the bunch
