The potential PlayStation 6 handheld is said to be less powerful than a PlayStation 5. Rumor has it that two chips are in development for the PlayStation 6. The potential handheld is now being said to not really be “next-gen.” According to the latest rumors from KeplerL2 on the NeoGaf forum, the PlayStation 5 Portable won't even be as powerful as the current PlayStation 5. According to KeplerL2, the handheld will have a “15W SoC on 3nm”. What the final specifications will look like is still uncertain.
However, 15W gives us an idea of the thermal performance (TDP). The Steam Deck, for example, has a TDP of 15W, while the PlayStation 5 has a TDP of 200W.

Why you labeled this PS6 when this has nothing to do with a home console? You meant to put PSVita successor.
Just a question do you have something against me because the way you always answer me is a bit annoyed or aggressive. What I write there or not is irrelevant to you and if you don't like what I post you don't have to reply . I don't want to start a fight here because I've already noticed that the mood here is very tense.

I mean, short of strapping a portable nuclear reactor to the back of a handheld, this is entirely to be expected. I'm kinda shocked at 15W TDP, I would have thought they would have gone even lower, but I guess nobody but the retro-gaming handheld community cares about making small handhelds anymore.

It's not so much on the literal you, its that you wrote PS6 instead of a successor to the PSVita and confusing people with petty rumors outsourced by randoms on the internet. I may sound aggressive buts its entirely on the wording of your discussions that make me question each of your threads.
Let me reiterate again, this has nothing to do with you Dany as a person, but proper wording is key

it doesn't matter if it is it isn't powerful, if the games that come out for are sh!t this is isn't worth it.
and lets be real their "lineup" of Sony games they currently have are almost all walking/talking sims with some combat sprinkled in, and no another "remaster lol" or remake of a ps4/ps5 game doesn't interest me. all happily stick to my android handheld that's loaded with PS1/PS2 games.

The mood here isn't more or less tense than most of other gaming forums all over internet. We have people from all ages, and forums were created for that, share information, discuss things and try to point when something is wrong.

The user just pointed out that the information or the way you redacted the "article" is confusing, as you mention Playstation versions up and down. If he didn't say, another person would, that's how internet works. We can say you have been kindly pointed out that you can't say "Playstation 6 portable" in a thread that seems to be more like news than your opinion. Of course, we are free to say whatever we want, as long as we respect each other, but it would be nice if we try to adjust to reality, because otherwise forums would be full of crap that nobody ends believing lol.

I am the kind of person who does not feel aggression in every corner, because there are many different people in the world, and everyone says things in a different way, and sometimes we can feel good or bad, it's human condition and there is nothing we can do.

Just have fun and be weird like everyone else :)

And now to the point, a portable console that is less powerful than a PS5 isn't any mystery, why would it? and I can certainly assure the console won't be 15W TDP, not even 15W low power CPU's are 15W anymore, and Steam Deck isn't an exception. That's why those Ryzens can be set to 25W, because 15W is too low for CPU + GPU, unless you're playing only Minecraft.

The only iGPU that matches the PS5 right now is the 8060S, but it's packed with a CPU that costs more than a PS5 and has a TDP way higher than 15W.

If a new Playstation Portable is going to be launched in 2026, my bet is that it will be close to an 8040S, which is a little bit more than a Series S.

I'm sorry but a handheld being weaker isn't a surprise.

Unless Sony will make the PS6 into a Switch-esque hybrid there's 0 reason the console would be weaker.

On the other hand: the gap between the PS4 Pro and PS5 wasn't that big so what kind of gap will we see between a 5 Pro and the 6?

Unless the handheld in question is literally this

But then the battery life will be one of the biggest questions...

Well at least we know for sure that the PS9 will be snortable:

the PS4 draws about 50 watts while running, in unmodified form. The PS5 is quite a lot more, I havent actually measured though. With current battery technology you can expect minutes. A handful of them.

I feel that Sony simply doesn't know how to maintain handhelds properly.

The PSP was good for its epoch but in a post-iPhone world they cannot sustain it. Even the DSi is obsolete so that the tools the 3DS had were not that great while the DS was still good on its own.

They killed the PS Vita and the PS Portal is just a glorified Wii U-esque console (being dependant on a home console).

I thought the Xperia was Sony's logical step in handhelds.

I unironically love that ad. The y2k is strong in this one.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the future VR would directly connect to our synapses.

As a professional firmware/electronics engineer I will NEVER connect something electronic to my brain. I know how that particular sausage is made. No thanks.

I'm no engineer but for privacy reasons I will not connect something to my brain. My thoughts, my dreams, my wants should be kept private (as much as companies already know ourself well enough).

Not sure I care about buying a home console and a handheld unless it combines the two like the Switch. While I play portably here and there, most of my Switch playtime has been docked. It's nice to have the option to play portably, I just don't do it a lot so I'm not sure I'd spend $600+ on a Sony handheld unless that was the PS6 and it had a dock like Switch.

I believe that's the PS4 Slim, and only showing the menu. If you're playing, it will go around 90-100w, depending on the game. Obviously, that power consumption is not sustainable in a portable device, not even in a laptop with a huge battery.

But I have to admit that, if they created a PS4 with the technology of 2025, it would consume 1/3 and it could be a portable device, but we are talking about something that could pottentially be around 300% more powerful, so there is no way you can cram that in something portable. As you said, battery technology is not there, and dissipation technology either.

Same energy as the people out there shocked that trying to play Elden Ring on their Steam Deck at full blast burns a hole in the middle of the thing.
I kinda miss when handheld games were made with technical limitations in mind...

Same. As much as I love Switch and the concept, I feel like a certain kind of game became more rare.

Honestly though I felt like that started to go away before Switch in the 3DS/Vita era.
