Just an idea I got after laughing on CDRom comments where some people mention the Polystation, Gamestation 5 and other weird "fake" stuff.

This should probably go into "suggestions" (move if needed, staff!) but wanted to first make a quick check on what people think.

Its about adding a section (maybe 2) to post and make an archive of those "fake" consoles.

I say maybe 2 sections because I would make a distinction between 2 kind of them:

-Unlicensed "fake" versions of branded consoles, also known as "clones", pretty common back then for the 8 and 16 bits ones, like the NASA

-Consoles that just were (and are) their own thing, mostly with pre-loaded. Ofc they use games from other consoles, but they are not clones and are not compatible with cartridges or disck of brand consoles (not clones)

I bet there are lot of fun and crazy stuff aroudn there, and seems an interesting and "goofy" thing to get into, even trying to investigate when and where they originated and some historical background about all that stuff.

Thoughts?

Here-here!
I second ye!

Love me some of that "jank-for-days" bootleg fare.

I remember getting a knock-off NES plug n play in the shape of N64 controller.
I don't remember exactly how many games it got but it was around the 100s, I could find it anymore in the house not even online but it was my first ever console tbh or first ever exposure to video games

I had several of those over the years... some pretty realistic-looking (gotta love that early Genesis piracy game), others hilariously bad.

I remember opening up a still-functional knockoff NES to study its innards and finding out that it was little more than a tiny board, a ribbon cable, and a pretty odd glue ball that binded it all to the shell... that's right, the makers wouldn't even bolt it down to its base.

Gotta love that level of confidence... there are high-end cars right now that wouldn't cut corners so cleanly XD

Oh yeah i remember those had 1000's of versions of Tetris & Snake and that car racing one..
TRASH ?️
I might be wrong, but I think it also had a pretty good racing game in there, and an Arkanoid-like game.

Still, they should have called it "Four In One" or something.

i think the most impressive thing about the brick was how they managed to turn 4 games into 9999 games ::lol

same! no matter how hard i try, i cannot play games or read things on a car ride!

i get so sick x.x
Yeah... motion sickness gets to me big time.

Sometimes the only option left is getting my face as close as possible to the open window so the constant influx of fresh air cleanses and easies my body.

Indeed it is.

I haven't really braved it, but I heard Android games are much easier to play on vehicles than those old LCD games ever were.

now that you mention it i dont get nearly as sick looking at my phone sometimes in the car...

i will try it next i can :3

Seems people liked it? So i guess this should be moved to suggestions "officially"

@TrepieGroupie#1 ?
I moved to Suggestions but i'll respond to it saying pretty much the same i said to Sandogma's idea for a FPGA section: bootleg/clone consoles can probably be well covered in the "other consoles & handhelds" section. We just need to edit the description to make it more clear...

Feel free to start a new thread there! I will love to see all the craziness we would discover there, and i know many i could mention.

/\ Agreed. I think at this point in time it doesn't really need it's own section. The forum isn't yet getting enough posts to need it (which is to be expected given the place is still in it's infancy).
That said, I think expanding the amount of categories is something I'm happy to see happen as and when it becomes necessary. It just depends on how thing go moving forwards.
We don't want to make things confusing for new members by complicating the index, nor make the place harder to moderate for staff.

I do appreciate the suggestion, and like I said, things will be reconsidered as we inevitably get busier over the coming months/years. But for now (regarding categories) "less is more". :)

We'll use this section for it:
