There is a thread about favorite MegaDrive shmups so let's talk about our favorite PC Engine shmups.

Back in the day MegaDrive was seen by many as definitive 16 bit system for shmups and PC Engine was it's greatest rival when it comes to this game genre. If I had to choose my fav PCE shmup it would be Soldier Blade and when it comes to PC Engine CD library it would be Spriggan (Compile was awesome developer)

Absolutely two killer exclusives. I just finished Bouken Danshaku Don: The Lost Sunheart on PCE and surprising turned out to be a solid horizontal shooter. Plenty of excellent shmups Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams, Image Fight, Tatsujin, Gate of Thunder. But I'd go with Down Load on Hu and Kiaidan 00 on CD. They both have that early 90s small dev charm with strong focus on fun gameplay above all else- I come back to these often.

You can't go wrong with Irem games..

And a COMPLETE list of ALL Irem.. MAME WILL be required to play many of these. I do have MAME 0.268 ROMs (merged) full set for any individual games if requested.

OH.. The PC Engine was designed for shooters - the rest of the genres came over time.
DunkeyKong has an almost complete list above - 2/3 missing but obscure shooters. Let me get my CD's out..

Hellfire S - The Another Story -
Zero Wing -
Lords of Thunder -

The 3 I listed will only play from a CD. Can't get a CD image file to work for some games on emulators. I've got about 20 CD's for PC Engine so just ask. Will give a link and then you download the CD image and write it out yourself. Some games are extended versions of the original rom games with FULL audio soundtrack like Hellfire S above. They ARE worth playing!!

My current PC Engine CD list..

Ys 1+2
Ys 3 - Wanderers from Ys
Ys4 - The Dawn of Ys (English patched)
Hellfire S - The Another Story
Dragon Slayer - Legend of Heroes
Valis II
Valis III
Dungeon Explorer 2
Rainbow Islands
Xak 3 - The Eternal recurrence
Monster Lair
Exile
Exile 2 - Wicked Phenomenon
Dracula X - Rondo of Blood (Eng Translated)
Might and Magic 3 - Isles of Terra
Zero Wing
Lords of Thunder
Sherlock Holmes - Consulting detective 1
Sherlock Holmes - Consulting detective 2
It Came from the Desert
Loom
Cotton - Fantastic Night Dreams
and finally
The Addams Family

ALL enhanced audio/video segments from the original games where applicable.
There's some more but waiting for Jap-Eng translation first (RPG's mainly).

I'll keep you informed! I was part of a PSO 2 Translation project so I do have a few contacts. Playing on Japanese servers when game was released over there. Took 7 years for English version and new name. We knew about the new project from Sega and was asked to keep quiet about it.
Here's the videos NOT included in PSO 2:New Genesis - The reason we were asked to keep quiet..

From the original Japanese game.. https://www.youtube.com/@zengobag5341/videos
6 videos

Check the year of videos and when New Genesis was released. We had loads of fun with the Japanese players - line dancing in the forum on Halloween - 5 players did a show.. I wish I'd have recorded it now.. Brilliant to see but New Genesis happened and then the fun went out of the game!!!
I still play it but it's not the same now for me..

Just trust me tho..

Thanks - another download now when I thought I'd got what I wanted on CD ;-)
Appreciated loads - My list of CD games below.. 20+ physical and growing but only have CD's that I'm likely to play. Loads missing but I have access to all CD's (images) if I want them.

Thanks.. Like I said above to OmegaWeapon.. I now have to get another 2 CD games.
My list is below of CD titles - ones I play often. No sense in downloading CD games if they are NOT going to be played. ;-)

OH.. Black bar on photo... NOT photoshopped - That is one of my Covid-19 masks I used to bring smiles to peoples faces.. I've got 2 dog ones as well. I like a bit of fun..

We are playing two of them over at RGC, still a few days to go, might want to drop by if you guys are interested.

Surprised there has been no mention of Coryoon yet! Made by the same team that ended up developing Air Zonk. Makes lovely use of the PC Engine's color palette with a lot of attention to detail in the sprites & backgrounds.
